Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 03, 2020 12:55 pm Hi we are building a house where most likely 3 walls will be BAL 29 (or BAL40 at the worst case scenario). Our living area faces west with bush view (other walls have privacy issues) so most of out wide features windows or panel windows will be in this side. I know BAL 29 and BAL 40 windows have a have a minimal thickness glass. Does it increase insulation quality of the room? We were thinking of getting these west side living room windows double glazed. Is double glazing even possible with BAL 29/ BAL 40 windows? Does the extra thick glass in these windows already provide good internal thermal insulation? We were worried about our BASIX score having 2/3 large floor length and wide windows in the west area. So hoping either these bal rated windows come with better BaSIX score or have double glazing option. Please share your thoughts Thanks Can A BAL 29 or BAL 40 windows be double glazed? 2Mar 03, 2020 3:35 pm If you are concerned about the house heating up when the west sun hits your windows, the double glazing isn’t really going to help. It doesn’t stop heat from direct sunlight getting through. Low-e glass would be better, or vertical shading, or those black (but see-through) external blinds. Have you had a look at http://www.yourhome.gov.au Re: Can A BAL 29 or BAL 40 windows be double glazed? 3Mar 03, 2020 4:35 pm Hillsbuilds If you are concerned about the house heating up when the west sun hits your windows, the double glazing isn’t really going to help. Have you had a look at http://www.yourhome.gov.au Thank you hillsbuilds its a great article. We did read similar articles when we built last time (not PPOR). They were not in bushfire zone and we didn’t care about views. West had almost no windows except a slit like something in the bathroom as far as I remember. The best way to achieve energy efficiency would be designing our open/ living area in a way that it doesn’t have full length windows of feature windows to the west. Unfortunately its out PPOR and have have great view in the west so we have to have wide and large feature windows. Having shutter externally or blinds internally sounds great but we dont know which would be a BAL 29/40 acceptable way of achieving this. Can A BAL 29 or BAL 40 windows be double glazed? 5Mar 03, 2020 5:59 pm If the sunlight can come in through the window, double glazing will not stop the heat. If it is a hot day outside but your window is shaded, then DG will stop the outside heat transferring to the inside of the house, esp if the window frames are thermally broken. Our DG windows were designed to be shaded in summer, so even though they are not thermally broken, the difference in inside and outside temps on a hot day is significant. But we don’t have a view to the west, so the windows facing that way were deliberately designed to be small or none at all. I can’t comment about BAL, it was not something we had to deal with. Re: Can A BAL 29 or BAL 40 windows be double glazed? 6Mar 05, 2020 4:50 pm Hi we have a BAL 29 too and have double glazed west facing windows not thermally broken as I didn't know about that when we built. The glass had to be on the outside 6mm toughened glass. Inside it didn't matter. We are down southern Tasmania and in summer the heat blasts through those windows. But as its only a few days we manage ok, then we are glad to get the afternoon sun warming the house . Cheers Re: Can A BAL 29 or BAL 40 windows be double glazed? 7Mar 05, 2020 7:54 pm Lorri Hi we have a BAL 29 too and have double glazed west facing windows not thermally broken as I didn't know about that when we built. Re: Can A BAL 29 or BAL 40 windows be double glazed? 8Mar 05, 2020 7:55 pm Oliver George Windows glass cant absorbs the heat. Double glazing is possible with BAL 29/ BAL 40 windows and its not helpful. Good Quality glasses of the window little protect but not 100% provide a solution. I am thinking what else can be done to to increase BASIX and thermal efficiency. Low E glass? I absolutely hate plantation shutters. We will get good quality blinds though Re: Can A BAL 29 or BAL 40 windows be double glazed? 11Mar 07, 2020 1:18 pm Lorri Forgot to say look on my photos, the big windows in the lounge and sunroom get the western sun, the sunroom gets the west sun nerly full on. Thanks your windows look beautiful I don't know them all, the first 2 top of your list are best known.
