Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Oct 05, 2016 3:34 pm We are in the process of deciding on a plan. I would like raised ceiling heights in the L-shaped kitchen dining, living rooms. I have been told by the sales person it is not cost effective to do that and better to raise the entire house's ceiling height at $6k to raise and another $6k for the doors etc for a 25.4sq / 235.9 m2 . We have recently been viewing renovated early 90s homes where this has been done. Any advice to help us understand this element of home design is appreciated. Many thanks in advance Searching for the perfect block of land on the Gold Coast is mission impossible! Re: Raising ceiling height in kitchen dining livingroom advi 2Oct 05, 2016 4:53 pm Hi ideaswoman, not sure on your method of construction and how that affects the cost to raise ceilings but we're building a 260m2 double storey with double brick ground floor and timber framed first floor and to raise all our internal ceilings to 30c is costing us $4,913 but we are not altering our doors so unless your family is very tall this is not necessary unless you prefer it aesthetically. We walked through a number of our builders display homes including the one our plans are based on and they all had 30c ceilings with regular doors and they didn't look out of place or too small in my opinion so maybe worthwhile looking at some examples in person. Also if you were to only do your living area I would be worried that when you then walk into other areas of the house they will feel smaller and more closed in than they actually are just because of the drop in ceiling height. I think you would be better off raising the whole house, rather then only parts, but hard to know without seeing your design. I haven't changed my doors or anything, the only thing I did was extend the overhead cupboards in the kitchen to take advantage of the higher ceiling. Re: Raising ceiling height in kitchen dining livingroom advi 4Oct 07, 2016 12:04 am Imo it depends on how high you raise the ceiling to if you should raise the doors aswell. For me 2.55m and below standard doors. 2.7m and above taller doors. It also depends on how high you want to go as to how much it will cost. Re: Raising ceiling height in kitchen dining livingroom advi 5Oct 07, 2016 12:05 am Also what about raked ceiling in the dining kitchen lounge. We have a raked ceiling in our house atm and it adds a real feeling of space in a mediocre size room Re: Raising ceiling height in kitchen dining livingroom advi 6Oct 07, 2016 2:45 pm We raised all ours to 2.75 and kept doors at standard height. The display is the same and it doesn't feel or look odd. Having said that our mates have 2.7 throughout with 2.4 doors and looks good too. They also have 3m high in the entrance and media then coffered the ceiling. Does look and feel amazing but the $$$ for me wouldn't justify it. It comes down to your budget and what you can get to fit within it. I agree with the above that 2.7 throughout will be better value and adds that extra spacious feeling throughout Re: Raising ceiling height in kitchen dining livingroom advi 8Dec 29, 2020 8:50 am aloenyx I raised my ceilings to 2.7m throughout the house (single 16sq house) and it is costing me $2,800. Ceiling height variety can help create different feels for a house. E.g. lower celings for more intimate spaces (bedrooms, reading rooms) and higher for formal spaces (dining). People generally don't feel cosy and intimate in a room with high ceilings and likewise, in a room usually containing many people, low ceilings feel uncomfortable for most. Cost and ineffective ventilation/air conditioning may be a barrier to this.
