Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 19, 2020 8:29 am Hi, My builder is suggesting Kingspan aircell Permicav XV cavity wall insulation on our NW side. The cavity is only 50mm wide, the product is 5.5mm thick. On the company's video, I do see the finished external wall, but no brick ties seem to be visible, which is strange? I believe they are a must, so what is going on? Thanks. Re: Insulation in cavity-brick wire ties and conduits interf 2Feb 19, 2020 8:54 am The bricklayers build the external leaf of bricks including all the wall ties. Then they lay the permicav up the wall and cut a slot at every brick tie and push it through the permicav. There are also foam Packers that they put on the brick ties to prevent the permicav from touching the bricks. The brick ties hold it in place as they build the inside leaf, folding the brick ties down as they go. With double brick you typically don't run conduits down the cavity, they are chased into the bricks. When that outer leaf heats up in summer it helps to prevent the radiant heat getting across the cavity. I've got it on my entire house Accessible Carpentry & Cabinets accessiblecarpentry@gmail.com accessiblecarpentry.com.au https://www.facebook.com/pages/Accessible-Carpentry-Cabinets/583314911709039 Re: Insulation in cavity-brick wire ties and conduits interf 6May 22, 2020 8:50 am A word of warning here: Watch the brickies as they were lazy with putting in the 20mm spacer bisuits and the company told me, that reduces the R-rating from R 1.8 down to R 1.3 or 1/3, so I have suggested to the builder to give me a refund. Re: Insulation in cavity-brick wire ties and conduits interf 7May 22, 2020 12:41 pm The main challenge will be to make sure they remove excess mortar inside the cavity on both leaves. The mortar, when touching aluminium side of your foil, will get into chemical reaction and deteriorate it. Unfortunately, this is a very common practice with bricklayers. Re: Insulation in cavity-brick wire ties and conduits interf 9May 22, 2020 4:48 pm Watch the outer leaf being done and insist on one 20mm spacer biscuit every second brick tie. Take photos like I did as evidence; not that the supervisor bothered to reply after I contacted his "buffer". Re: Insulation in cavity-brick wire ties and conduits interf 11May 23, 2020 8:39 am The company also says there has to be a 50mm overlap, top sheet over lower, the overlap has to be taped, that is a must and then the co. says it should also be taped around windows and doors?! One bag of spacers plus one tape per roll of insulation has to be ordered. Just watch it being delivered? I am saying that double brick has similar thermal performance due to thermal mass effect.
