Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jan 28, 2020 1:04 pm Hi all Just looking for some advice as I got a quotation for DG windows. One is with reveals - Meranti and other one with hard timber. I want to know if it’s ok to have Meranti reveals instead of timber. Is Meranti durable Commonly used for window reveals? Re: Window Reveals- Meranti vs timber 2Jan 28, 2020 1:11 pm Meranti is "hardwood". If you are referring to internal reveals then Meranti is fine. Re: Window Reveals- Meranti vs timber 4Jan 29, 2020 12:01 am You're not understanding chippy correctly. Meranti is timber, so your question paraphrased is 'should I go for timber or timber'. Personally I'll choose Vic Ash or Rubberwood ýover Meranti as Meranti is a softwood IMO. Re: Window Reveals- Meranti vs timber 5Jan 29, 2020 12:30 am The term "hardwood" is often misunderstood. Balsa wood is actually a hardwood although it is very soft. Pine is a softwood although being harder than balsa. What makes a timber a hardwood or a softwood is the way it grows and not the hardness of the timber. Meranti is technically a hardwood so while one manufacturer may state that they are using Meranti and one may say they are using hardwood they both may be using Meranti. You'd have to ask specifically what hardwood they are using. Meranti is easy to work with and is often finger jointed so it's a cheap and commonly used timber for internal reveals. If you want a harder timber you'd need to confirm what you want, but as most houses use MDF architraves that aren't particularly hard, using meranti in the reveals should be fine. Unfortunately the timber yard didn't have them in the profile I wanted, then looked at Meranti which was FJ, it didn't feel right and was very soft so in the end I ended up using FJ pine. Regardless, Meranti is a much better choice than MDF for windows. Meranti is a very good timber providing you are painting and not staining from what im told. Plasterboard Gyprock is very popular as a reveal liner these days. You need to provide a way of supporting it, we use a modified timber reveal or bracket.
