Hi,
Been in our new house for 1 year now and have noticed water damage on architrave where the kitchen sink is. The wood is MDF and I think the water has soaked through the tile grout in behind the architrave. Now the wood is bloated and paint is chipping away.
I contacted the builder and they said they can tile the architrave but I reckon that would look weird as the tiles would come out more than splashback. And wouldn't the water just absorb through the grout anyway and further damage the architrave behind the tiling?
Is there anything else that can be done to fix this? Should I have the whole window frame replaced?

So many units use it in bathrooms and kitchens near water, a recipe for disaster. How much more would an alternate material cost?? $2 extra pm?? If that? MDF?? Really? If you want to try and fix it perhaps sand it down, apply several layers of thick paint that will essentially keep any water off the wood and try and get all the corners and joints sealed with silicone. DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair Plumber or renovation companies are good choices.
