Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 25, 2008 6:43 pm Hi guys and girls!!!
This is my first post and I am planning on building a house, I guess my first question is what are people's roof preference? What are the pros and cons of TILES VS COLORBOND?? Apart from the 'Raindrops' factor, is there anything else to consider? Does one have more VALUE than the other when selling down the track? Thank you almight board!! Re: What type of roof would you choose - Tile or Colorbond??? 2Sep 25, 2008 7:16 pm This is a very personal decision Sting. For me I always went Colourbond for the simple fact that there is a company which recolours rooftiles which means in the future I will have to re paint my roof. (If I ever planned on being in one place long enough ) .
But there is no such need for colourbond, it should look the same throughout its life. Another thought is you can not break into your house through the roof with colourbond so for safety neither can anyone else. But in the next house I will be getting roof tiles as I think they have more character for the style of house I am thinking of building and that is where it is personal. So its really down to what you like for your home. I can't vote for one as I like both. Re: What type of roof would you choose - Tile or Colorbond??? 3Sep 25, 2008 7:16 pm I'm not sure I really have a preference, I like the smooth sleek look of colourbond and I like the sound of rain on the roof but neither is a big deal, our house is haveing coloubond roof, mainly because our builder only does colour bond roofs, wasn't something I minded either way. Re: What type of roof would you choose - Tile or Colorbond??? 5Sep 25, 2008 7:19 pm I'm the same... it really does depend on the style of house. We had no option... Colourbond not allowed on our estate. But if I'd had a choice it woiuld ahve come down to what best suited the house. 2 years ago I would have said Colourbond hands down.... But I'm swinging back to tiles!

Terrence Malick Re: What type of roof would you choose - Tile or Colorbond??? 6Sep 25, 2008 7:25 pm I'll vote for Colorbond as that is what we are having - I think it gives our house a sleek modern look, though I don't mind a nice flat or terracotta tile either, depending on the look of your house as the others ahve said.
Another advantage of Colorbond is that it does not place as much stress on your frame as it is nice and light. Of course your frame is structured to hold the weight of tiles...but I like the thought that my frame is not stressed Re: What type of roof would you choose - Tile or Colorbond??? 7Sep 25, 2008 7:46 pm We chose tiles because they were $600 cheaper... we actually thought they were more expensive when we first signed up and weren't going to ask about having tiles as an option.
I've always lived in houses with a tiled roof and never had problems with leaks or break-ins Re: What type of roof would you choose - Tile or Colorbond??? 8Sep 25, 2008 7:52 pm Thanks for your input, yeah i know what you mean by it depending on the style of the house and preference.
Also a good point about safety issues, as Colorbond > Tiles in this aspect. Cheers Re: What type of roof would you choose - Tile or Colorbond??? 9Sep 25, 2008 8:09 pm Our family house I grew up in was colorbond.. And for the last 8 years I have lived under tiles.. One big difference I noticed was that colorbond is very noisy when it rains... tiles are alot quieter during rain...
or maybe it was the fact that I grew up on a farm of 250acres and our next door neighbours were 2km's away and there was nothing else to hear apart from the rain!! So I would choose tiles for the noise factor. Re: What type of roof would you choose - Tile or Colorbond??? 10Sep 25, 2008 8:11 pm I like the look of both - though we are going with tiles for our house. With M the price to upgrade to Colourbond is $10,000!!!
Damo Visit my blog: http://damosbitofblog.blogspot.com/ Re: What type of roof would you choose - Tile or Colorbond??? 11Sep 25, 2008 8:55 pm I wanted colourbond as I love the sound of rain of the roof but it was for an extra $10 000 too, so we had to go tiles Kylie handover happened 15/6/09...love living on an acre but still so much to do! Re: What type of roof would you choose - Tile or Colorbond??? 12Sep 25, 2008 9:08 pm I guess it depend son style but personally I like tiles.
beegee Re: What type of roof would you choose - Tile or Colorbond??? 14Sep 26, 2008 7:39 am Colorbond all the way, sleek and contemporary, and also less rook battens.
aussiedamo I like the look of both - though we are going with tiles for our house. With M the price to upgrade to Colourbond is $10,000!!! Damo $10k What the? The big M, so the upgrade was 10K but did they minus off the price of the standard roof tile inclusion? I doubt it, typical double dipping. So I would choose tiles for the noise factor. I agree about the noisiness aspect ...referring to the rain and not the neighbours because we make enough noise ourselves I spent the first 8 years of my life back in Adelaide under a metal roof and I do remember it being really noisy when it rained. But then again now days there seems to be less rain Having said that I still like tiles more http://www.rentfreeatlast.blogspot.com/ Building in Berwick ----------------------------------------------------------- "Flying is learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss." - Douglas Adams Re: What type of roof would you choose - Tile or Colorbond??? 16Sep 26, 2008 4:12 pm I was in the same position a few weeks ago and had a choice between terracotta tiles or colorbond
lucky for me there was no price difference. I ended up going with tiles even though i actually liked colorbon, the decider vote was our local realestate agent who advised me that from a sales/marketing perspective tiles generally attracts more customers and viewed as more of a 'prestige' item rather than colorbond. But if u don't intend to move anytime soon the who cares right!
