Browse Forums Building A New House Re: What type of roof would you choose - Tile or Colorbond??? 21Sep 27, 2008 9:16 am I could be wrong, but from my experience, in most other countries, a metal roof is normally a lot cheaper than cement tiles. I recon its a bonus to get a tiled roof cheaper. Also if you look at the vote count, they are pretty much on par with colourbond in the popularity stakes. Re: What type of roof would you choose - Tile or Colorbond??? 22Sep 27, 2008 9:28 am we could have had a zincalum roof for the same price as tiles but colorbond was more expensive. from memory it was only a couple of thousand more so we went colorbond. Our builder is building the house for a different building company. They do several other companies houses as well as their own. Their own standard is colorbond roofing but the company that our house design comes from has tiles as it's standard as it's a cheaper option. Re: What type of roof would you choose - Tile or Colorbond??? 23Sep 27, 2008 10:00 am We have chosen tiles and upgraded to terracotta tiles, which means I will never have to repaint the roof. Concrete roof tiles, lose their colour and need to be repainted.
So in the end personal style/preference. Re: What type of roof would you choose - Tile or Colorbond??? 24Sep 28, 2008 11:38 pm I think colorbond requires less maintenance, does it?
IFTE Re: What type of roof would you choose - Tile or Colorbond??? 25Sep 29, 2008 4:16 pm From a building/structual point of view, Colorbond is much better than tiles.
A Colorbond roof on an average house weighs around 2 tonnes against a tiled roof which weighs around 8 tonnes. You can clearly imagine the difference on the structure this weight can have. Frames under tiles are more stressed than metal, the inside of the houses are more prone to cracking in the gyprock etc. Apart from fading of the colours in Colorbond (especially darker ones) there is no maintanance unless under lots of trees which soils the surface requiring cleaning against tiles which can crack and will eventually need recoating. Re: What type of roof would you choose - Tile or Colorbond??? 26Sep 29, 2008 5:42 pm I voted for colorbond, I do like the look - but it doesn't suit every house and we are all different, so if cost isn't an option, go with what you want most!
Luke, Interesting point about the weight of colorbond v's tiles.. I never thought of that, now I'm more thankful for the colorbond! Re: What type of roof would you choose - Tile or Colorbond??? 27Sep 30, 2008 8:23 pm Of course the weight of the tiles would be taken into account when the frame is designed. On a new house you should have a warranty on the frame (at least i would hope you do) which would protect you against cracking gyprock.
It would probably not be a good idea to replace an ex colourbond roof with tiles before you get an engineer to assess the structure. You should pressure clean your roof first and make sure the paint you buy also is anti mould. 4 18563 Natural stone tiles like slate, travertine, and limestone add a timeless, elegant look to… 0 24243 Your house roof does not show rusting other than some surface rust on the flashings.
