Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Oct 27, 2019 2:10 pm Hi everyone, My wife and I have recently purchased a block of land in Albert Park, SA and are in the process of talking with Sterling homes for our design. We have decided to go with solar panels and have everything electric with no gas connection. The rep from Sterling told us that he believed if there was gas pipes down the street that we had to connect to this service as it was a government regulation??? Does anyone know if this is the case or not??? or can someone point me in the right direction to get further information about. Ideally we do not want gas and plan on adding more solar panels with battery storage in the near future. any info is much appreciated Re: Do I need to have gas connected 2Oct 27, 2019 4:07 pm It sounds suss, did you ask the rep for a regulatory/legislated reference? Not being in SA, I don't know what Govt body you would contact for advice. I like your plans! 3in1 Supadiverta. Rainwater Harvesting Best Practice using syphonic drainage. Re: Do I need to have gas connected 3Oct 27, 2019 6:16 pm It appears that in certain developments you do indeed have to compulsorily connect to gas in SA. Here's some info found on the subject.(this is not a political ad) https://www.markparnell.org.au/mandatory_gas It seems crazy to me that you would have to. I'm in WA and our last house we decided to forgo a gas connection. We had solar hws and PV panels and RC AC Didn't miss the gas connection and saved heaps by not having to do a gas run in. Well done finding that document! That is simply amazing but your description of crazy is perhaps more apt. "The practice of property developers mandating gas connection and gas use in new homes is locking South Australian families into higher energy bills and higher emissions, according to Mark Parnell MLC." I can't see how property developers can legally do that as surely it would come under the provision of Unfair Contract Term as defined by the ACCC. Haven't they heard of the Paris Accord? 3in1 Supadiverta. Rainwater Harvesting Best Practice using syphonic drainage. Cleaner Neater Smarter Cheaper Supa Gutter Pumper. It said the green's had introduced a bill to remove the need for compulsory gas connection. I wonder how it got on? I wouldn't be surprised if it was somehow voted down. Energy companies have pretty heavy duty lobby groups. It would seem highly unfair to be forced to connect gas if we did not want it. If this was the case what could happen if we chose not to have it connected? Would our building approvals be denied? Could we just say we will have it connected and then decide at the last minute to not get it done?
