Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Steel frame vs timber 21Sep 25, 2008 9:56 am My two cents worth;
Steel framing is a engineered framing solution. The individual members of a steel framed wall panel or roof truss in isolation are quite flimsy and delicate. But when they are all bolted togeather, they become extremely solid and structural. A bit like, if a hold a thin wooden stick between my hands, I can snap it rather easily, but if I hold a bunch of sticks togeather and try snap that, I cant. Hence the term, 'Strenght in numbers' Pat. Re: Steel frame vs timber 22Sep 26, 2008 8:04 am As Pat said don't worry about the individual bits, grab the frame and give it a shake.....once it's braced and noggings are in it should be solid - timber or steel.
Do you worry about the Westgate bridge....and the end of the day is held up with wire strands....which are the bundled into wires...which are then bundled into cables....which are then bundled into bunches of cable supports coming down holding up what you drive on. Grab an individual wire and you could break it... Re: Steel frame vs timber 23Sep 26, 2008 3:58 pm At the end of the day here's what i have summarised when i was doing my research...
- If you live in a high risk termite area....go steel if you don't then its boils down to preference and there isn't any real differences between the two. Below are a listing of comments i've heard (not sure if its true or not) - Steel makes it annoying to put a picture frame up...(what are u going to drill into?) only way was to tell them where u want your pictures then they put a wooden pannel in for you to drill and hang your pictures. - In extreme heat, when the metal heat up and expands/contracts some people claim to be able to hear noises at night and that could be annoying - When the doors are open some people can hear annoying sounds from wind going through ur house. - If you are building on stumps they use wooden stumps then put steel on top (kinda defeats the purpose. IMO Good luck smeags Re: Steel frame vs timber 24Sep 26, 2008 4:28 pm where we are is declared as "termite prone", but it doesn't mean the actual street or estate aera are attacked by termite, does it?
some councils, like Banyule, is declared "termite prone" area - the whole banyule area. how should we judge? im our new land estate, new houses are being built all (so far) in timber - although it is in Banyuel -termite prone area! Putting pictures up is the same as timber.. for most small or medium pictures you just put the nail into the plaster.. If it is a bit heavier use a wall anchor or screw into a stud. IMO No they never use wooden stumps on a house - piers are brick, concrete or adjustable steel - the latter being the norm for steel frame dwellings. As for termites, about 20% of new houses now are being built with termite treated ( blue pine) framing - its only about 12% dearer than normal framing pine. This is 100% true. You can not hang anything on steel frames. very frustrating 8 7990 Hi I am wanting some opinions about the build of a steel shed I am going to get one about 4.5 x 2.5 m steel shed and the height will be about 2.3-2.4m high The one I am… 0 14442 Hi, I have a steel frame house which was built 2 years ago.
