Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 19, 2008 11:01 pm hi
we are now on our 3rd site supervisor and the frame still hasnt been completed (contract signed at the beginning of May!!!). we have just been informed that the slab is short on 2 sides and that they will be cutting into the current clab and then attaching another bit of contrete and some metal strips or something - it hasnt really been explained to me in detail. is this standard practice? It doesnt sound very structurally safe to me. or is there anything that i can do? as you can see - from 3 May to now (19 Sept) and still no completed frame is just taking an age so not happy on that front and then for them to say that they havent done it correctly as well is taking the biscuit - any advice?! is this slab being too short and the way that they are rectifying it standard or shoul di be demanding something else? thanks guys Re: slab too short 2Sep 19, 2008 11:20 pm From memory... this happened to someone else and they did the same thing... when Mike (to_do_list) gets on he'll be able to tell you. He knows about such things. Or else I'm sure someone else will know.
Actually, TDL is usually on at this time! Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. It's not cheap at $500 a visit but I think in this case considering the builder seems to have lost the plot it's a necessity. Re: slab too short 6Sep 22, 2008 7:16 am Chris
To answer your PM....hopefully what they are doing is cutting back your slab a bit, inserting steel reinforcing rods, applying some goop to the cut surface to ensure a good bond between the old and the new concrete and then repouring to the right dimensions. Need to make sure that new concrete is adequately founded so whatever edge beam there is continued through the "repair". I'd ask them to provide documentation from an engineer stating that the fix has been certified as being adequate. Don't forget all your loads from the roof are transferred around the edges of you slab. Whilst not ideal certainly can recover from the error. Post a few piccies if you can. Cheers, Mike It will be neat but you won't have much freeboard. At least they are not weep holes. Are you in a high intensity rainfall region?
