Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Nov 15, 2013 12:27 am Hi! We are building on a battleaxe and wondering where we put the letterbox, in front of our house or at the top of the driveway (50m long)? Secondly, we don't have any grass, we're paving and mulching everywhere for a very low maintenance garden. At the top of the very long driveway there is a patch of dirt. It's kind of near my driveway, not sure if it's mine and there's three other houses closer. Anyway, do I need to get a lawn mower and buy some grass seed? Turf? Could I pave it or mulch it, or would council have a problem since it is their land? I tried calling twice, but the staff at the other end had no idea. So I'm reaching out, hoping someone here knows. Cheers! Re: Letterbox for a battleaxe and council land maintenance 2Nov 15, 2013 4:50 am Put the box at the street end of your driveway (unless you don't want any post) There is some advice about letter boxes here. http://www.anewhouse.com.au/2012/01/your-letter-box/ For the little bit of land check your title documents the plan should show what you own. Re: Letterbox for a battleaxe and council land maintenance 3Nov 15, 2013 7:03 am I'd lay claim to the "dirt" ... Make it a car park for your place - ie set it up so cars coming to you have easy access. Is it "nature strip" - or inside owners line ? Re: Letterbox for a battleaxe and council land maintenance 4Nov 15, 2013 9:46 pm I've tried to illustrate (poorly done in MS Paint) the situation. Our land (in yellow) ends at the red line. The 'dirt patch' in brown is close to our driveway as you see, like where our council patch would be. At least I'm pretty sure that the letterbox goes up the top of the driveway, thanks for that. Would the brown area be for your bins to sit on collection day or do they sit on the green section right next to the road on your diagram? I certainly wouldn't be planting grass on that small patch if you don't already own a lawn mower! Low maintenance would be the way to go. Definitely put your letterbox by the street or you won't receive your mail Re: Letterbox for a battleaxe and council land maintenance 6Nov 16, 2013 6:29 am Looking at your plan I would expect this could be common property shared by yourself and the front block. As an untidy area will reflect more on you I would look to put some low maintenance surface there, not grass The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: Letterbox for a battleaxe and council land maintenance 7Nov 16, 2013 8:28 am I'd say common property. You should be able to get a plan where it's clearly marked. We have same prob with battle axe block re letterbox. Will just have to stick it in what feels like neighbours front yard / no helping it though! The bins would have to go on the dirt patch, good point. In that sense, if we use it for that, we should maintain it. bashworth Looking at your plan I would expect this could be common property shared by yourself and the front block.
