Standard colours are often only specced in 20mm thick. If you want 40mm laminated or thicker edges the cost goes up. If you are using a grained or feature stone then the edges are mitred and matched so the cost is higher again. It's easy for the price to ramp up quickly and the builder won't miss out on a healthy margin.
