Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Advice on customised floor plan 21Jun 13, 2019 9:03 am I have been looking at your kitchen layout and just throwing something completely different into the wind. What if you flip the kitchen around. You actually end up with more room in the meals area as you don't have to worry about the stools at the island and the chairs at the table. And if you put the full sink in the butlers pantry, you could have a single sink in the island. There is wall space on the back of the pantry to hang art. You would gain about 50-60cm width in the meals area. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I also changed the front bedroom to include WIR and ensuite. You will need cavity sliders for the doors. All you need to do is mirror the sink so the drainer is on the hotplate side. That way you can rest hot pots on the drainer while cooking/ draining etc. You have plenty of bench space for meal prep on your island. When you're actively cooking it's good to have things close to hand, which is where your fridge / open pantry shelves/ sink / hotplate work really well. That makes sense, certainly more practical to switch the hot plate and sink. I would also leave the fridge on the back wall where it is very accessible but not the focal point of your kitchen. Just go with what you like best and keep playing with the plan until you are really happy that it all works. Good luck. If you use Microsoft Paint, you can change things around as much as you like. Your kitchen will be facing a dark wall instead of interacting with people in the dining/ living. The original kitchen was actually very functional. Re: Advice on customised floor plan 28Jun 13, 2019 10:31 pm Our block is facing south so the kitchen meals and dinning will get maximum sunlight. I kinda like the open view from kitchen to dining/living Re: Advice on customised floor plan 33Jun 14, 2019 1:16 am Unless you're willing to give up space in the meals area, then essentially you've got a 3.8m x 3.8m space for your kitchen. Which is a perfectly good size for a kitchen, but not really enough for a kitchen AND walk-in pantry, and by trying to fit both of those in, you'll end up compromising on both. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ If you can live without the walk-in pantry, then just open up the whole space and have an open pantry, or at least take the wall out, but cover the pantry shelves up with matching floor to ceiling cupboard doors. And then you'll have a usable island too. Remember, if you're putting anything on an island like a sink or cooktop, the island should be at least 1.2m deep, otherwise the people sitting on the stools have no space to eat, and constantly get splashed with water from the sink! I love the open space but for a family with young kids I really need a walk in pantry.
