Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 04, 2019 12:48 pm [ltr]Hi All,[/ltr] [ltr]Please assist if possible with my design dilemma - my block has a 1 meter high retaining wall on one side ( north orientation as i have east facing block). The block, that wall retains, is a corner block. I am kind of confused as what is best possible way to not block any light as i planning to have my living areas on that side (north). we also have 1.8 meter high fence requirement. So for me the simple calculations is that with retaining wall and fence i will have a 2.8 m high wall next to me. So please assist with any ideas and also if any one can guide as per below .[/ltr] [ltr]how thick is the slab - H or M[/ltr] [ltr]if i go for 3 m high ceilings will it assist[/ltr] [ltr]should i go for celestial roof[/ltr] [ltr]cannot go double storey as Mrs does not like [/ltr] if enough light cannot enter then will it be a good idea to have a smaller house and bigger backyard - lot is 410 in size with 13.4 front and 30.8 depth. So 24 SQ vs 29 Sq house [ltr]thanks in advance[/ltr] [ltr]Mic[/ltr] Re: 1m high retaining wall on one side - North side 2Jun 04, 2019 2:12 pm We have the same situation with a 1.9 metre retaining wall then the fence on top, actually comes to about 3.6 metres all up,we added two skylights, one for kitchen, one for family room area, not a problem light wise, single storey also,we are on strip footings about 60cms off the ground,we drafted our plan for the block with draftsman husband being a Architect obviously throwing his opionion in,our skylights were standard with double glazing, you can get even better skylights which throw tons of lights in , it won't be a problem, good luck. Re: 1m high retaining wall on one side - North side 3Jun 04, 2019 5:25 pm thanks for the guidance. The retaining wall is all along the northern side and full length. The land on the other side is at same height as retaining wall. I thought about putting a fence on the wall with .8 height but the corner lot may not be able to comply considering they are a meter high. The developer also stated that their block is flat which means they will remain at that level. In terms of light we like the sun coming in for winter days hence the reason for thinking about living areas on North. Celestial roof vs skylight? what is considered to be better? Thank you again Simeon.. I will call my certifier for that. Have a good day 4 1329 Thanks for the insights, that makes perfect sense, and yeah, I will be leaning on the experience of the excavator operator entirely. 6 11072 Hi All, I engaged a tradie to install concrete retaining wall 600-800mm high over 32 meters in Victoria.
