Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 24, 2019 12:55 am We just moved into our new build and realized that the house plan is probably not the best or energy effecient. We moved from a country where it's hot all year around and have lived in high rises all our lives so the weather and 4 seasons here in Perth is a new experience. We never thought of it until I stumbled onto this website and really started questioning our choices. I wish our sales rep would have educated us or informed us about orientation. I've attached my floor plan. I know it's a bit too late but any ideas or suggestions on how we can improve it for the future . Any ideas will be helpful. Thanks. Thankyou for your response. Much appreciated. Yes solar is something that we are considering on the north western side and will be putting it up soon. Just wondering how do I get in more light and heat considering the home is oriented in not the best way. Re: Wrong orientation 6Apr 24, 2019 4:34 pm Plant deciduous trees for shade outside the NW br windows. Re: Wrong orientation 8Apr 25, 2019 12:43 pm amilelka Regardless of the orientation, the living areas in this house will always be pretty dark. The only windows to the living/dining are shaded by the alfresco. At least your bedrooms will be sunny in winter. Yes sadly that's true. When we went to see the display home it looked way brighter, they didn't have the garage wall, more like a glass wall and it was being used as the sales rep office. So I think that gave an illusion of brightness. I think we may have to consider some renovation at some point. And this design won some award too. I think I've got some great suggestions here though and will def consider skylights in the long run or maybe a window in the kitchen wall and some trees on the northern side to shade the rooms from summer sun. Re: Wrong orientation 10Apr 25, 2019 6:34 pm WaldorfL Why didn’t you add full width kitchen window splashback? Would’ve made the area much brighter That's our biggest regret, to be honest I see those windows everywhere now but around last year I don't remember seeing it on any floor plans we saw. Also the display home seemed quite bright just the way it was, so never thought that It would be necessary. Theirs faced the northern side ours faces the southern so I guess our oversight.
