Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 08, 2022 11:23 am Hi all, While I imagine this question floats around a lot, I've searched previous topics and am no clearer on my answer! Choosing a builder in SA is proving stressful, Google reviews are next to useless, and even word of mouth recommdations are a mixed bag. (Although we've been told by more than one person to avoid AV Jennings and Fairmont). Originally we were considering Metricon, but we found the staff to be rude and dismissive (not just one person, three different reps). Then it came down to Sterling and Statesman, because while I had heard good things about Weeks, their designs and style are just not for us. But again, there are worlds of mixed reviews. I've just spent a bit of time here looking for anything on Sterling, and most of the feedback is several years old, and because they had the design we love the most I'm hoping to get some more recent experiences from anyone dealing with them. As with everyone else, we have a budget, and it seems its near impossible to get an actual build turn-key price, because the "quotes" just saying "included/included" but don't break anything down, and things that I ask them to include they keep "forgetting" to do. I'm not signing anything until I feel comfortable with the builder. Would we be better to take the design we like to Weeks and asking them their price? Then, looking through this forum, I've come across suggested builders such as MACBS and Bradford Homes. Would we be better choosing a smaller builder? MACBS looks great, but I'm really bad at visualising, and would really like to be able to walk through a display homes so I can see what (or close to) we're building (but we'll definitely have changes to make to any base designs, we've been wanting to do this for a long time so have very specific ideas of what we are after). Any advice, suggestions, and thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you! Re: Recommended Builders in Adelaide 2Jun 08, 2022 1:53 pm What is your budget and what type of home (single storey, size, # bedrooms/bathrooms etc.)? Do you need to build soon or could you wait a year or two? Things are a bit hairy right now both price wise and solvency wise. It's hard to know what prices will be and how strong builders' books are (especially ones like Metricon). I'm guessing SA isn't as bad as the eastern states though Re: Recommended Builders in Adelaide 3Jun 08, 2022 2:04 pm stonesthrow What is your budget and what type of home (single storey, size, # bedrooms/bathrooms etc.)? I'm guessing SA isn't as bad as the eastern states though We're looking at house and land packages so the budget depends on the land. No immediate rush no. Single storey, 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom. So you think we might be better to wait? It's frustrating because of the land releases around the place, they always make it sound like they're selling out and they'll all be gone within 2 months. But then again, they've been releasing new packages in various locations for several years. Re: Recommended Builders in Adelaide 4Jun 08, 2022 3:27 pm Personally, my partner and I built with Hickinbotham Homes (parent company of Statesman) & we couldn't have been happier with them! We found them to be prompt, polite, and extremely professional. They delivered our home in a reasonable time frame (even with COVID-related delays) and the build quality has been superb. While there were a few tiny hiccups along the way, I'd 100% recommend them to anyone who asked. My own experience aside, I think the best way to find out what people REALLY think of a builder is to follow their hashtag on instagram. There are plenty of people posting about their first-hand experiences, and documenting their entire build journey online. It's something I wish I had known about before starting my own house build! Larger builders like Hickinbotham and Metricon also tend to have customer-run Facebook groups. They're a fantastic place to get answers to more specific questions about pricing and selections etc. If you want a bit more meat, I've written an article on how to pick the perfect builder for your job... if you're interested: https://homebuildershandbook.com.au/how-to-choose-a-builder-for-your-new-home/ I've also got a masterlist of budget builders in Adelaide (+ where you can find their display homes) if you need help narrowing down the list: https://homebuildershandbook.com.au/affordable-home-builders-in-adelaide/ More than happy to chat more about my own house-building experience if you want!
