Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jan 13, 2019 8:52 am Hi, Would love everyone opinions on awning v's tilt only (no turn) windows. I am considering to choose between big awning windows or tilt only (no turn) windows. Our house has a square floor plan with plenty of big windows and air can flow directly through the house and out through an opening on the other side of the home. Everyone could share their opinions and photos to help me out. Pros and cons of the windows they have selected would be great! Re: Awning vs Tilt only (no turn) windows 2Jan 13, 2019 8:54 pm My current house has a combination of awning and sliding windows. The awning windows look particularly good, but the airflow through them sucks, and I'm yet to actually find awning windows that are any different. I have one at either end of a long hallway and the flow between them is pretty poor. The main drama is that the awning often doesn't lift up enough to allow meaningful breeze through - so maybe try find a type that does? On the other hand, the sliding windows - either vertical or horizontal - allow a huge amount of air in. There are different types of window coverings that work best with each, so it mostly comes down to personal preference. If good airflow is important to you, I would always pick some kind of sliding window. I can't comment on tilt because I've never had them. Re: Awning vs Tilt only (no turn) windows 3Jan 13, 2019 9:32 pm Either I've always had poor quality sliding windows (I've lived in houses with several brands) or it is just common that sliding windows just don't seal very well. Noises and small drafts come through the middle where the fixed window and the sliding panel overlap. Our new house is only having Awning windows, they have a double seal and when you close them you pull them into the frame making a very tight seal. I think the tilt windows you're talking about are similar in their ability to pull tight to seal. The main advantage an awning window will have over a tilt window is being able to stay open while it is raining. As long as you have windows at either ends of the house you should be able to achieve a decent cross ventilation no matter the window you use. Re: Awning vs Tilt only (no turn) windows 4Jan 14, 2019 5:08 pm Have had sliding windows plus Awning windows Now have tilt N turn, by far the best has been the tilt N turn, their so versatile and opening like a door so convenient, the tilt is fantastic for smaller air flow and door allows easy cleaning and massive air flow while been very secure when shut, If price was not a factor it would be number 1 tilt N turn by a mile, Number 2 sliding, Number 3 awning or tilt only. 4 14309 Personally, considering your layout (study/work desks in bedrooms), I don't think you have any other option but to leave NW windows and make them as big as possible e.g.… 7 10483 Hi, I'm planning to build a new house and wanted to get some feedback on the different window designs for a master bedroom.
