Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Owner/ Builder -Architect Build PM'd by Rehaan Builders 142Apr 30, 2019 3:03 pm cag57 I have huge huge thermally broken double glazed windows and sliding doors that are 100mm and 150mm wide/ thick with argon gas. (eg. windows are 3m by 3m and sliding door is 3m high by 4.2m) So I am using that method for strength and cater for wider window frames. I am still having brick veneer in certain portions. In some cases they are a typical solid wall and another there will be a cavity wall (no veneer here). Re: Owner/ Builder -Architect Build PM'd by Rehaan Builders 143Apr 30, 2019 3:06 pm alexp79 you really need to look at yourself and your responses. You either have your knickers in a twist because this is a good project or you seriously have a problem. Whatever it is get over it! I have never had to do this to anyone but enough mate! Re: Owner/ Builder -Architect Build PM'd by Rehaan Builders 144Apr 30, 2019 3:14 pm Does doing it with a cavity have any benefits with movement ? I'm looking to build later this year but went off double brick due to movement and cracks appearing in render. I know some say if the foundation is right you won't get cracks, but having had 2 double brick homes both develop cracks I'm not sure Re: Owner/ Builder -Architect Build PM'd by Rehaan Builders 145Apr 30, 2019 3:28 pm Nothing is wrong with my tone or with myself enquiring about confusing usage of building terminology (as you have seen above, other people get confused too). Apologies if I put it wrong, but, indeed, terminology is quite confusing as double brick (at least in Australia) generally means cavity structural walls without any framing support. We also have term for solid brick construction, which I believe, is more relevant to your case. In your case, we are still talking about timber framed home with solid brick veneer. Your build certainly looks good and is unique mix of various construction methods and approaches, which I believe is quite to helpful for anyone on that forum. Re: Owner/ Builder -Architect Build PM'd by Rehaan Builders 146Apr 30, 2019 3:46 pm Alexp79, I have to agree with others, anyone can google and become an expert, Have a look at this webpage http://www.build.com.au/bricks It clearly states ‘Solid brick homes have a double layer of brick with a layer of foam insulation in between’, so this is an Australian website saying the oppposite to what your google search showed. GR’s photos clearly show in parts 2 rows of bricks, whether they are double brick or solid brick is irrelevant, if it confuses you, ask questions, dont come on here and saying someone is wrong or incorrect as it comes across as arrogant, and not the purpose of this forum. You’ve previously stated on another post that you are not an expert, but it is very clear you like to research and question everyone and everything (even to the point of questioning GR’s builder!). Maybe you should talk about your own build (I note you don’t have a thread for your build) and provide information about the thermal benefits, building methods etc and then people can ask you questions if they want. Re: Owner/ Builder -Architect Build PM'd by Rehaan Builders 147Apr 30, 2019 3:56 pm I have to agree with gogo65. People, builders and public put in a lot of money to build and they certainly don't want to be treated in this way. Your comments raise more issues for many people and they then get confused and have to ask questions around whether they are going the right way. I am stopping any comments on questions on this particular thread though. It makes sense that you are using the second skin of bricks to effectively pack out your wider window frames. Great solution! Been researching RBV. ![]() Re: Owner/ Builder -Architect Build PM'd by Rehaan Builders 154Apr 30, 2019 8:04 pm Bricks are non structural element in this build. We are doing double skin in some areas with cavity or not cavity where necessary for aesthetic purposes only. Hope this clears the air. Projects going well and hopefully will be finished with structure in the coming weeks. Thank you everyone for all the insights. It does help to double check and rethink again as this is not a standard off the shelf house. #rehaanbuilders #www.rehaanbuilders.com.au Re: Owner/ Builder -Architect Build PM'd by Rehaan Builders 156Jun 13, 2019 11:19 pm Scaffolding up, rendering completed today. We had a small delay as we were working on the feature elements on the facade however decisions made turned out for the better. Couple of questions: What exactly are we looking at there, with those rendered surfaces? Is that render over brick on the ground floor (photos 2,3,4), and render over Orangeboard for the first floor (photo 1). Also, what was your experience with the Orangeboard. Any negatives surface? Was fire an issue? Cheers and thanks Arron Re: Owner/ Builder -Architect Build PM'd by Rehaan Builders 160Jun 15, 2019 11:35 pm [quote="TheGodwit":1cnp4no8]Thanks for the photos and progress updates. As for negatives with orangeboard - I went onsite today, the material is very strong. I gave it a shake and a few knocks - and once rendered it's pretty solid. Hard to tell if it's orangeboard or bricks until you give it a few knocks. Fire isn't an issue. It's BAL rated (I think) and if there is a negative - just felt like I was knocking on a door when I gave it a couple of knocks - insulation wise - I don't have to buy any insulation for the wall so it saved me some money and it didn't feel as cold as bricks when I touched it. In the front wall for the garage I have bricks as cars can damage orangeboard. Having said this if a car crashes into bricks there isn't much difference between bricks and orangeboard 😂 I am pleased with the results.
