Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Oct 24, 2018 6:32 pm Hi everyone, I'm curious to know what people think is acceptable for chipped brick faces. The bricks I picked are Thunderstorm by Selkirk. They have a grey brick face on red bricks. Whilst visiting my house a few weeks ago I noticed that quite a few bricks have chips, some quite visible. I have emailed my builder but have got no response. Am I simply being picky? I did pay extra for the category 7 bricks. From the look of the ones not laid, it look like they came like that from the supplier or were handled badly after they arrived on site. If they arrived that way, they shouldn’t have been accepted by the builder. If they were damaged during handling and laying, that's not acceptable either. To me, it looks like your brickkies think that wall is going to be rendered. This is made markedly worse if you paid extra for those bricks. When I looked at the bricks onsite they appeared sub-standard. I paid an extra $1400 for the upgrade. I love the brick colour, so I don't regret the bricks. I just wish the bricklayers had been more careful with the bricks that they used. I have messaged the builder twice now about it and have not heard My contract mentioned something about 3% affected bricks. I need to re-read it. I put "issues" in inverted commas because I think you will likely find this is always going to happen to a greater or lessor degree to these types of bricks. I could take a picture of the bricks on the facade of the house I am living in right now and they look exactly like the ones still on the pallet you photographed. These chips / imperfections / whatever you want to call them haven't really been an issue for the person who owns the house I am living in and to be honest, we've never really thought anything of it till you mentioned it in your post. Anyway, unless I am missing something in the photos you have taken, I don't really think it is a huge deal. But that is just me and I realise I am not the owner who has a deeply vested interest in the home. Although I would not be overly enthused if it were my own house, I would have steered clear of bricks with that type of finish in the first place myself (different colour on outside to inside). I know the bricks I've chosen for my own build, for example would probably look like yours as well had there been a significant contrast between the inner and outer colours. Your call of course but I suspect your contract will state that brick quality is likely to be imperfect and there will be compromises that are considered "within spec" or "acceptable". Incidentally, near where I currently live there are a lot of houses going up and these type of bricks seem to be all the rage. Looking at the pallets over the last couple of days and I pretty much see what you've photographed. So either people are not too critical, they are getting them rendered (unlikely - they are all too "good" for that) or there are going to be mass complaints! Finally, I am not sure where you are building, but keep companies like this in mind: http://nawkaw.com.au/locations/melbourne/ There are threads on this forum from people who have used them for brick issues and such a company (or similar) one would effectively make any issues disappear (after all, bricks that are evenly coloured throughout are going to have chips and other surface imperfections as well - they are just hidden on account of the colour).
