Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 06, 2008 10:41 pm Hi there,
Has anyone installed a Western Red Cedar Timber Sectional Door to their new home. I have seen a few in display homes and they look fantastic. What are your thoughts. Do they a lot of upkeep. Any idea on the cost of a double door? Building in Melbourne. Any feedback would be much appreciated. Re: Timber Garage Door 2Sep 06, 2008 11:48 pm The Upkeep on a timber garage door has always scared me. We had a really good Aluminium wood look door a few houses ago. They colour matched it for us to the wood colour we used on our eaves, and the guy across the road had real wood he was out there at least every 4 months sanding and varnishing. This was 4-5 years ago though....they might be better now........
Good luck researching................K Re: Timber Garage Door 3Sep 07, 2008 6:46 am We're getting the metal timber-look one as well. We'll already have enough real timber in our windows to maintain - I wouldn't want to have a whole garage door to deal with as well!
Could you have the metal look-a-likes or were you set on the real thing? Timber garage door 4Sep 07, 2008 6:50 am I agree, we are having timber look. The windows will be enough for me, our house now has timber everywhere and I think it is a pain in the butt.
Maintenance, Maintenance, Maintenance versus Lifestyle, Lifestyle, Lifestyle.... Re: Timber Garage Door 5Sep 07, 2008 6:13 pm I am glad someone else asked about this we are thinking of having a timber look door - but not sure of the extra cost yet. Is anyone able to let us know if it is heaps extra?
We will be having a timber post out the front and timber features on our roof (2 gables) but we are in the debating stage as we are unsure how it will look with our brick and roof choice - i don't know if it will look good with a light coloured brick girraween (boral bricks) and roof of daintree (boral tiles). All the ones I have seen appear to be on the rendered houses? We think they look fantastic with the right colours. I'm thinking though if we have timber features it should look ok... I would definitely go the timber look door as I think they look real and I would hate to be sanding and varnishing every 4-5 months OMG!!! Good luck with your decision! Our house is 99% bricks (we'll have a small piece of cement render above one window only) - only they aren't light coloured bricks - but I think the timber colour still looks great with bricks. Re: Timber Garage Door 9Sep 08, 2008 4:46 pm Our timber-look door by B&D was an extra $495 to upgrade from a standard steel sectional door (not a roller door - panel lift) After 4 years - we're in! Re: Timber Garage Door 10Sep 08, 2008 5:27 pm Thanks everyone for your advice. I thought this might be the case in regards to upkeep, but I have to admit they do look good. However having seen some of the timber look doors on the blogs they look good as well without the extra work!! Re: Timber Garage Door 11Sep 08, 2008 6:12 pm OUrs was a serious upgrade cost - somewhere around $1400 ?( without checking my paperwork).
Has anyone actually priced what a double timber-look door would cost direct from a supplier, as a comparison to the upgrade charge ? The house was 18months old when we bought it and I'm not sure when it was last done by the previous owner. West is worst Re: Timber Garage Door 17Sep 09, 2008 9:45 pm we considered a cedar timber door for our double garage. it was from memory about an extra 4 k. I asked about how well they keep their good looks and was told they don't look anywhere near as good after a few years. we had originally intended cedar type gables and garage door. i wasn't too keep on the "timber look" (fake timber) doors so we took it off the build. It would have been a lovely feature but we didn't want the maintenance hassle. Dover white or surfmist garage door. I am having trouble choosing a garage door.
