Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 06, 2008 10:09 pm Hi all,
I'm after a bit of advice from other PD customers. My tiling was done the other week and I was most unhappy with the job. My SS agreed to fix some of it but argued that most of it was up to standard. I've seen lots of pictures of bathrooms from PD customers but there is a limit to what I can tell from these distant camera shots. These photos are actually the 2nd attempt - the first was even worse. IMO the workmanship is not professional and the tiler simply doesn't know how to tile. So my question is: does this look to be the same standard as your own bathrooms or is this way off? Thankyou.. I really just want to know if I'm being unreasonable or if this is pretty standard for PD houses. Re: Tiling - need some advice from PD customers 2Sep 06, 2008 10:12 pm Mozzie, is it the laying you are not happy with? Re: Tiling - need some advice from PD customers 3Sep 06, 2008 10:14 pm I can't see the first 4 photos, but I think the others must not be close up enough to see properly what's wrong? I did read your blog earlier and noticed you were unhappy with the un-evenness of the tiles, is that right? That might be a bit hard to tell in the pictures... Re: Tiling - need some advice from PD customers 6Sep 06, 2008 10:42 pm The ones I thought were wonky aren't now, but in the first couple of photos they do look a bit off, as if he has laid them on a bit of an angle. What has he done in the first photo, is it scratched. Some of the grouting doesnt seem even also. Maybe its the angle at which they are taken. I would think though when it is all cleaned you probably wont notice things as much and people arent going to get up close and check it out, except you of course. Re: Tiling - need some advice from PD customers 8Sep 06, 2008 11:13 pm The tiles in the insert in the second shower are all over the place.
And what's with the weirdly cut floor one? I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Tiling - need some advice from PD customers 10Sep 06, 2008 11:28 pm Mozzie, Do you know any tilers that could come and inspect your job for you. Just to find out wheather or not this sort of thing is acceptable by their standards. I personally don't think it is, but at least then you can go back to your SS and discuss whaether or not he would accept these tiles in his house like this and what sort of compenastion you will get if they don't come back and fix it.
It is OHS with the stripping you could cut yourself on that no probs. With all that being said I love your kitchen and everything else is looking very nice. Tiling 12Sep 07, 2008 6:52 am I wuld NOT accept that. You pay alot of money for this. Go and check out the display home and if it is better use that as your arguement. That should be their standard! Re: Tiling - need some advice from PD customers 13Sep 07, 2008 1:46 pm Okay thanks for the feedback everyone. I was hoping maybe some PD customers could make a comparison with their own bathrooms so I can know for sure what'a acceptable. Deep down though I know it's rubbish and they are just trying to pass it off as okay because they've hired a useless contractor and don't want to pay another one.
The main bathroom tiling is not too bad now (not too good either) and I'm fairly happy with the color scheme (it's the best I could come up with at the time). The ensuite though is terrible and I now regret the choices I made - I took a risk with the tile scheme and I don't think it paid off. I didn't buy the house so I could re-do stuff on it though so I'm still going to fight to have some sort of compensation or rectification. I signed up with a larger builder with a supposedly good reputation so I didn't have to go through this nonsense. They are just like everyone else - if something gets stuffed up they argue and try and pressure you into accepting it and then eventually they just stop listening and pretend it's end of story. I'm sure they know that they have stuffed up. Re: Tiling - need some advice from PD customers 14Sep 07, 2008 3:12 pm Mozzie what area are you building?
Do you have your own indipendant inspector? What these issues pass Vic standards? I would consider getting your own inspector if you havnt already. The person im using is great and has really made PD pull their finger out and we have only completed frame and he has indicated to my SS that he will be picking on plenty more. Let me know if you want his details, at least he will be able to give you advise. Re: Tiling - need some advice from PD customers 15Sep 07, 2008 4:37 pm Hi snistr,
I wasn't going to get an inspection as from what I've seen as soon as you get an independant inspection with PD they seem to intentionally take forever to resolve the issues. But considering they have taken the entire contract time to build the house anyway this is no longer an issue. I found the Australian standard for ceramic tiles but as with all standards it comes at a cost (in this case over $150) and if I'm going to pay that kind of money I may as well get an independant inspector to go over the whole place. I sent Kevin an email through his site but I'd be thankfull if you could forward me your inspectors details in case Kevin doesn't respond (which seems to happen a bit). Thanks for the advice. Re: Tiling - need some advice from PD customers 16Sep 07, 2008 4:52 pm Good idea to get an inspector to cast a professional eye over it - even if it means PD take forever to fix it, would be better than living forever with a ******* tile job.
Which pic is the ensuite? I can't see any risky looking colour selections, they all look nice and neutral to me? Hi VK, Think it's worth investing time in an Owner Builder course to equip you with basic knowledge on Australian Building Industry and its regulations. Also, I suggest… 11 23728 Levelling compound Ardit is the best but buy a bag of sand and make sand dam to protect your wood floor 2 15259 XCEM Alpha flooring seems to relatively new and I could not found any reviews.
