If you take the doorway from the scullery away and flip the laundry and change the external door to a sliding door, you end up with a lot more space. If you do front loading washer and dryer, you could also have a bench all the way to the door or room for a linen closet. It then gives you room to create a small side corridor that you can have the powder room from instead of off the main hall. I would put double doors or one large cavity slider on the media room and line them up with the corridor to the laundry which would allow a lot more light into the central hallway downstairs. If it was me, I would make the Media Room slightly narrower to have a wider hallway leading into the back of the house. Re: Void and/or increased ceiling heights 22Aug 07, 2018 11:14 pm Thanks, the laundry suggestion is really good. IT would certainly get a lot more light and will creates more space for shelving. We are also thinking of getting rid of the scullery and converting it to just large pantry. I am yet to justify cost to put in a scullery and a functional use for it. The rumpus room has a big wall and agree by putting a double door will add a lot of light - alternatively if the budget permits we were hoping to replace the wall to the hallway with wooden slats. Have fun designing your new house. I am sure it will be amazing. Re: Void and/or increased ceiling heights 24Sep 11, 2018 7:58 pm So after much or to and fro here is our floor plan which has incorporated a lot of the feedback. We have lost a big window at the stairs which is disappointing but hopefully with the void we should have enough light at both levels in the house. What do you guys think? Re: Void and/or increased ceiling heights 26Sep 12, 2018 8:31 am Why not make the void wider to the walls of BRs 3 and 4 (and shorter of course to the doors)? The walkways on either side seem to be a bit of dead space. Re: Void and/or increased ceiling heights 29Jan 09, 2020 8:16 am Hi Gregorian, I trust you are well. I understand this is a bit old post but I think you would have completed your build. I am also in process of going through design process and still trying to find the best location for void. How did you go with the void and any feedback. Looking forward to it. Thanks Re: Void and/or increased ceiling heights 30Jan 14, 2020 12:38 pm We have a void above the entry in our build. It's still at frame stage at the moment so a little hard to picture how successful or otherwise it will be. I'd put one in the entry (with a gorgeous light fitting for impact) Then your stairwell also acts as a void. If you must have another one (and bear in mind noise travels up a void) Put it in a long rectangle in the family room and up into the activity room. You could put a feature fireplace in the family room, continue the stone/tiles etc all the way up to 2nd floor ceiling. The heat will rise and assist with warming the room.
