Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 06, 2008 6:24 pm Hey all,
Have a concrete slab due for early next next week. Just wondering if any of you guys are superstitious, and are or have thrown coins into your concrete slab for good luck? If you have, how did you do this? Did you just throw it on the soil, or into the concrete whilst the workers were working? Cheers Building Atlantique Mk 2 with Carlisle Homes. Frame has started. I have never heard of it either. Isn't it to pur a coin in your Christmas Pudding???? Re: Superstitiousness - Throwing A Coin Into Your Concrete Slab 4Sep 06, 2008 6:33 pm No, neither have I.
My parents built a new house and stuck a good luck charm on the framework so that it is now inside the wall, enclosed by the plaster. They are not superstitious but a Japanese friend gave them the charm and the suggestion so they went along with it out of courtesy. That was 8 years ago and they've been enjoying a happy and healthy retirement in new house so maybe.....?? Re: Superstitiousness - Throwing A Coin Into Your Concrete Slab 5Sep 06, 2008 6:46 pm we threw some coins in just as they were about to start pouring the concrete. it certainly didn't buy us any speed with the build but we liked the sentiment! Re: Superstitiousness - Throwing A Coin Into Your Concrete Slab 6Sep 06, 2008 6:46 pm We put a Saint Joseph(Catholic) at our front door while we were selling our last house. He is the patron saint for families and homes etc. We put him there for good luck for selling.......
I haven't heard of the coins though I think if you think it will bring good luck thats whats important.......... I would go while they are pouring and just chuck them in. Re: Superstitiousness - Throwing A Coin Into Your Concrete Slab 7Sep 06, 2008 6:49 pm I've never heard about throwing coins, but I did see one of my neighbours -to- be throwing small pebbles into the formwork before the slab was poured - I don't know what the significance of that was....... Then if/when it gets pulled down however many years later the new owners will find it. I am superstitious so I might just throw a couple of coins in and see if the mortgage rate continues to drop Kylie handover happened 15/6/09...love living on an acre but still so much to do! Re: Superstitiousness - Throwing A Coin Into Your Concrete Slab 12Sep 07, 2008 11:46 pm Yes i have heard of the coin tossing. A Greek friend told me of this tradition. He threw some coins into his slab as it was being poured. Its supposed to bring good luck and prosperity. Re: Superstitiousness - Throwing A Coin Into Your Concrete Slab 13Sep 08, 2008 9:11 am We renovated a house built in 1956 and while jack hammering the rear concrete porch we found a 1956 dated coin in the rubble. We've kept it in the house where it will stay when we move. Re: Superstitiousness - Throwing A Coin Into Your Concrete Slab 14Sep 08, 2008 1:58 pm donuts I haven't heard of the coin-tossing idea, but we did engrave our names and the year into the slab just after it was poured. oooo i really wanted to do this, but had to work on the day it was being poured, so by the time we got out to the block, the slab was dry...boo hoo havent heard of the coin thing either...but it sounds kinda cool...heheh...
