Building A New House
Jun 08, 2018 10:30 pm
We're looking for a (custom) builder to build us a 4 bed single story home on a 1 acre block in Lara VIC. We've come across the builder 'Mega Homes' in Tarneit. We've given them the detailed requirements/specification that we handed out to a few other builders (Palladium, Henden, Quantum).
They've come back with a really (I mean really) competitive quote, probably $30k below what we're seeing from other builders. They've asked us to come in a go through the quote, so I've not seen it yet, but on the phone, it sounds like they've included everything we've listed, including the likely need for an h2 slab, so they don't have much room to hide surprises.
Now, the problem is I can't find much information about them. I've searched on here and there is one build thread and a couple of minor mentions from back in 2009. I've seen news about them picking up work from NBG's collapse too. I've also seen anecdotal mention that they're not much more than a face on a builders' co-op (whatever that means).
Can anyone shed some light as to Mega Home's history, reputation (both 1st or 3rd hand)? They aren't on 'Product Review' but then neither are some other builders. They've got a number of high rated reviews on Google over the past 6 months, but even a good number of those look suspect when you dig into the profiles of the people leaving them (they look generated/paid for - more details on request).
Thanks in advance.

Hi there Eric_Melb, I cannot emphasise any clearer than DO NOT GO THERE. Built with Mega in Marshall in 2015. Here is a list of issues we have had and continue to have (been in the house over 2 years)
- Extremely poor communication, No contact or slow contact. Even in urgent situations (ie, Flooding)
-Poor and unprofessional tradesmen (namely Plumbing with 5+ issues)
- Materials used even though are to building code specifications are of a VERY low quality e.g - MDF particle board used around windows in house and skirting boards. This along with heavy condensation in the house has created swelling and mould issues, lengthy involvement with consumer affairs and engaging a building inspector at OUR own expense, did not help the situation.
-Finding unfinished, unpainted surfaces to this day.
-Due to several water leaks in kitchen area from substandard plumbing and at one point cabinet maker did re-plumbing, saw two cabinetry re-fits and flooding under our flooring which was eventually replaced at their expense but VERY hard to get the money.
-Noticed water damage and mould on opposite side of the wall to shower in main bathroom, have now pursued insurance claim but fault appears to be in the building of shower pit in slab. Now facing complete bathroom and partial bedroom rebuild.
-Even with "new management" and "change of business board directors" did not find any improvement with any of the aforementioned.
-Phone calls at time of kitchen flooding to reception staff were fobbed off and at one point "assured" by a lady claiming to be the CEO's assistant, that he would call back. He did not.
I could possibly give lots more smaller incidences but they are too numerous to recall.

Oof, that's a pretty damning review. Unfortunately, for them, this is the pattern we've seen with any reports. They've countered that their buy-out has fixed their previous problems but by your account, that doesn't seem the case. I asked if they had anything in place to put me in touch with previous clients, as some other builders do, but all they offered was their Google reviews, which look to have more than a couple of fake/paid for ones on there.
Thanks for taking the time to reply, I appreciate it.

We decided to not proceed with Mega Homes after they weren't able/willing to provide any credible testimonials as to their work. We're currently going ahead with Linked Building from Geelong.
