Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 31, 2018 7:43 pm Evening all, I am wondering if anyone can assist me with a question. We are building a new house and have just had the frame stage passed by the Building companies selected building inspector. Part of our build is to have a laundry chute from the upstairs to the ground floor laundry. Currently the floor joist runs straight through the middle of the chute opening. The floor joist has a stamp on the wood saying not to cut the flange. In speaking to the building supervisor he mentioned that you can cut them they just have to go back to the manufacturer to find out how they want it supported if they do. As the frame has been inspected and approved, and they haven't yet cut the floor joist, is that o.k? The frame was approved as is. If they change it after the inspection are they allowed to do this? Being a first time builder I have a lot of questions and things I don't know. Thank you Re: Can you cut the floor joists, after the frame inspection 2May 31, 2018 9:55 pm Without seeing it's hard to say If the all the joists span right across the building, and an additional support is provided either side of the chute it will probably be OK It;s really up the building surveyor and/or structural engineer to sign off on the cut.
