Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Tiled roof or Colorbond !? 21Mar 24, 2018 12:51 am We have solar panels too with our colourbond roof. And it does pretty good with 11 people living here. Can’t complain. viewtopic.php?t=86597 Re: Tiled roof or Colorbond !? 22Mar 24, 2018 1:13 am Just realised that I missed your choice post, apologises I don't get every notification for some reason. As per my first post they both have pros and cons, plenty of room for both products in the market. Best wishes for a smooth build. Re: Tiled roof or Colorbond !? 23Mar 24, 2018 9:37 am Actually, there's another argument in favour of Colorbond roofs for those with rooftop PV solar - solar panels become less efficient with increasing temperatures (it's called the "Max Power Temperature Coefficient" and varies from between brands and models, but 0.4 seems to be a reasonable average, which means that a typical solar panel will lose 0.4% of output for each degree centigrade above 25). During the warmer months, tiled roofs will collect and absorb more heat during the day than a Colorbond roof, with the difference in temperature being greatest in the mid-to-late afternoon - i.e. having a tiled roof will potentially be causing a loss of PV output during a peak demand period. I hadn't actually considered that potential until now; it'd be interesting to run the models and see how big the potential PV generation loss in a peak summer afternoon with a tiled roof vs a Colorbond roof actually would be, and what financial impact that'd have over the longer term. Re: Tiled roof or Colorbond !? 24Mar 24, 2018 9:56 am It also occurs to me that I haven't mentioned building for the OP's climate. Perth is in Climate Zone 5 (Warm Temperate), with mild winters and hot summers (see the yourhome.gov.au website for an introduction on designing to climate). In this climate the best response for all-round energy efficiency and comfort is internal thermal mass insulated from the outside - basically, best practice is to not have masonry (bricks and tiles) outside your insulation layer. In typical Australian practice, the traditional Perth approach of double-brick with a tiled roof is not the best suited to the local climate. Colorbond roofs with their lower external mass and better insulation are a better approach (as is using reverse brick veneer instead of double brick walls, but that's another topic altogether). No, I even have sections of narrowness where the tiles won't slide up any further. When I manage some spare time, I might play around with the first DIY part of my… 7 3615 Thank you so much. We ended going with the terrain that’s part of our brick. 2 1395 Thank you Pulse, I thought we did the right things; external shutters on all windows down all day, west side of the house nearly completely in the shadow of the large two… 6 25119 |
