Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 09, 2018 11:41 am Having followed the many different builds on Homeone for over a year now it’s finally time for us to start our own build thread, for those of you that are interested here is our back story but if you’re not interested (and that’s absolutely fine ) pictures will follow below. We are in SA and initially approached Metricon in Sept 2016 after seeing their Home Solution product advertised, after finding land and a house design that would work we got all the way up to contract signing and almost had the mortgage approved but the LMI company didn’t like the small electrical sub-station and commercial premises on the opposite side of the road to the land so we had to let it go. We tried for a couple of months to find another suitable piece of land but there were slim pickings in our chosen area. I should say up to this stage Metricon had been brilliant as we knew nothing about the whole process, Steve the salesman was always available and always had an answer for our questions, the back office staff also seemed efficient and friendly. We then came across an advert for a house and land package with Weeks, the land although not owned by them was only available through them, it was a subdivision where the owners had basically fenced off part of their garden and were selling it off. We went to see the land and it looked pretty flat and a reasonable size compared to many that we’d looked at. We went to one of their displays and met with Alice who was selling this particular package, she was very friendly and professional and talked us through the process which wasn’t dissimilar to Metricons but this was to be a more custom build where as Metricons Home Solution is an off the shelf type product with set floorplans, designs and colour schemes. We were pretty happy with the design they had put on there so we just tweaked it slightly by moving a wall and changing some windows, Alice forwarded us a quote and details about the land and we signed up a few days later, that was almost exactly a year ago Feb 2017. The admin process has felt a little slow at times however I don’t blame Weeks for that completely, the vendor of the land we have bought was pretty slow with the subdivision and insisted on waiting until our finance was secure before getting the sewer and water connection installed thus fully titling the block, in the meantime Weeks did the soil tests, engineering and council approvals while we did our selections. Selections was a lot of fun but we didn’t go mad, we have a budget and I want to stick to it as much as possible plus who knows what might happen once we break ground. That’s it in a nutshell, it’s been a great learning experience, stressful at times but we are really looking forward to seeing the house take shape, it still doesn’t feel real. We were initially advised that If we wanted a flat rear garden at the same level as the house we would need to retain the back and part of the sides but after quotes of up to $10k we said nah and will be quite happy with a slightly higher garden Re: Our First Home - New Build SA 6Feb 20, 2018 3:36 pm how exciting for you to have started now - seems like it has been a long journey. love your house plan - looks like lots of great storage and a huge family room. Re: Our First Home - New Build SA 18Mar 27, 2018 11:18 pm Very excited to see the end result. As it a very big land if properly used then you can make out of the box design style house. waiting to see the final result. Re: Our First Home - New Build SA 19Apr 09, 2018 9:43 pm Visited the slab today, its been marked out ready for frame going up and we have it on good authority from our neighbour after he spoke to the blokes that the frame should be here Tuesday / Wednesday ! 🤞 So it looks like we finally have some movement on site!
