Has anyone swapped from the standard concrete tiles to colorbond for roofing on a project build? I'm sure it would cost but hubby thinks it should be a credit because the steel is cheaper and requires less structure to hold it up. Thanks! Re: Concrete tiles to Colorbond roofing 2Aug 30, 2008 11:12 pm I haven't swapped, but I'm pretty sure it's not cheaper. If you use Colorbond, you have to have your roof sarked, for one, whereas you don't necessarily have to if it's tiled. I think the price of steel has also risen quite significantly in recent years, so while it used to be cheaper to do, it's not now! wife likes the sound of rain so is keen for the colourbond, as am i as i heard it was stronger, but now i am more concerned about insulation. (trying to get the R rating as high as i can!) living in adelaide has the extremes of temps on both ends of the scale! i heard about ritek roofing which is colourbond with foam insulation in between might be a winnah. -Nathan 2nd-Fix | Blog Building with Desyn Homes previously with the insolvent Endeavour Homes Re: Concrete tiles to Colorbond roofing 5Aug 30, 2008 11:30 pm Don't know which is better insulation. We can't have Colourbond at our estate so I didn't need to do any research on it at all. We are having tiles but still put sarking in anyway to help with insulation.
Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Concrete tiles to Colorbond roofing 6Aug 31, 2008 12:57 am Colorbond is not as good for insulation. It makes it harder to achieve the 5 star rating if you use it. However the advantage is if you have a big hail storm like Sydney had a number years back (not likely in Adelaide) then at least your roof won't end up a pile of broken pieces... Re: Concrete tiles to Colorbond roofing 7Aug 31, 2008 8:36 am Hi Happyhome, colorbond roofing was an upgrade would you believe , from Monier rooftiles. We were hit $3000 for our dbl storey 34 sq house
By the way, forget getting credits ! We upgraded on a few things, but didn't get a credit on anything. So in essence we've pretty much paid double for these things. We actually asked to be given the stnadard items which were being replaced - you can imagine the reaction ! HUH !! What a rort these !@#$%^ builders are on ! Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: Concrete tiles to Colorbond roofing 8Aug 31, 2008 9:57 am I like the colour selection of colourbond. We've previously used surfmist and it is so fresh looking and goes well with white framed windows too.
Looks like we'll have to fork over for the priveledge. Re: Concrete tiles to Colorbond roofing 9Aug 31, 2008 9:58 am We paid $2000 to upgrade to Colorbond. Not sure about insulation, but one advantage is that it's lighter than tiles so doesn't place as much stress on the frame.
I have heard that Colorbond IS cheaper for the builder to supply and install (ours was done in 2 days by 2 guys so in man power I think this is quicker than tiles?) but due to its popularity they can charge it as an upgrade.
