Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Dec 23, 2017 8:32 pm We will be doing the heating/cooling after handover. But i am starting to wonder which way would be the best way to go. Option A: Electric system then having solar panels installed Option B: Going with the gas system Gas system would be more money initially i think but once we add the price f solar panels to the electric it could be similar. Need it to work for a 300sq house. What have people done in their homes? Any useful info that could help us? Re: Electric OR Gas ducted heating/cooling??? 2Dec 23, 2017 9:25 pm What kind of electric heating? I'm not certain that there is an electric equivalent of gas ducted heating, and even if there was, I don't think it would be very efficient. Re: Electric OR Gas ducted heating/cooling??? 3Dec 23, 2017 10:39 pm Presumably by 'electric system' you mean ducted reverse-cycle aircon? What would be your cooling setup if you went with gas? Reverse-cycle aircon is a very efficient heater (moreso than gas), plus you can generate your own electricity from PV solar (as you're suggesting), and it also removes the need for a separate cooling system. If you're talking about an evaporative + gas combo vs. reverse-cycle, then maybe this recent thread might be of use (my own vote would definitely be for the reverse-cycle setup over gas, and some of my reasoning is in that thread). Re: Electric OR Gas ducted heating/cooling??? 4Dec 23, 2017 10:48 pm In my current unit we have abandoned the gas ducted heating and rely on reverse cycle units for all our heating and cooling. In fact, if you live in the right place and design your house well, you might not need an artificial heating solution either. True, and that's why I asked what the cooling setup would be, to confirm if there would be one. However, I readily admit that, given that the OP is building a GJ Gardner 'Mountain Views' project home, I went out on a bit of a limb and my default assumption was that active cooling would be a required/desired feature - happy to be shown otherwise! That’s a fair call Re: Electric OR Gas ducted heating/cooling??? 8Dec 24, 2017 12:33 pm Thanks for replies so far. If we went gas it was going to be an add on cooling unit as initially I thought Gas would be cheaper to run. But it’s looking like ducted reverse cycle is the way to go where I can can range in temps anywhere from -7 degrees to low 40s sometimes. In our current home we have a Lopi gas log fire which works great here but wouldn’t be big enough for our new house. Re: Electric OR Gas ducted heating/cooling??? 9Dec 24, 2017 12:58 pm OK, I've glanced at your Build thread and see that you are in the Southern Highlands. First question: what is your driving motivation - do you want heating and cooling (comfort) that is perfect but might cost more or are you willing to endure less pleasant days (hot or cold) but delivery temperature control more cheaply? Second question: are you on town gas - if not, I would pretty much rule out gas? Third question: do you think you will need to both heat and cool this house - if not, you could consider cutting one artificial process or perhaps just using fans in summer and/or portable heaters in winter. Fourth question: have you poured your slab yet - if not, you might consider hydronic heating or other radiant heating solutions, which are generally preferable to heating just the air directly. Re: Electric OR Gas ducted heating/cooling??? 10Dec 26, 2017 7:17 pm We do have town gas and would love to be able to heat and cool the house with heating much more important. We haven't poured our slab yet but have signed our build contract so not sure of we could add in hydronic heating would have to ask. Arcadelt do you work in the industry? Hi everyone!
