Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Nov 08, 2017 7:35 pm We have a large deck that will be the big feature of our new home get to be built, we were thinking merbau but I’m worried it will look too red, and thinking maybe Spotted Gum would suit house better (we have blackbutt timber floorboard inside). Anyone have any photos of their spotted gum decks? Re: Spotted Gum for a deck? 8Jan 09, 2018 9:50 am Have you had your deck built yet? I have light colored timber flooring in home so was hoping to use spotted gum as the various colors would blend better, But looks like I have to use Merbau due to deck being low off the ground. Less chance of warping is the advice I have been given by a few carpenters. Hope you are happy with the result. No, deck not built yet but funnily I was still wishing we had gone for Spotted Gum but we just couldn’t afford the extra cost. I spoke to a friend in Perth who builds decks and he said only uses Merbau. Ours will be low too but built over a slab, not sure if that makes any difference. I’m sure yours will look amazing. I was going to try and choose a natural oil without too much of the red pigment. I’ll post a photo when done but still waiting for frame to complete so will be a while. Re: Spotted Gum for a deck? 10Aug 03, 2018 6:07 pm We have decided to go spotted gum for our decking. I will post some progress shots shortly. We also wanted to avoid the redness of merbau and liked the idea of using an Australian wood.
