Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Oct 26, 2017 7:39 am Hi everyone We're just about to have our PCI meeting, we were on site yesterday (clean up has happened) and there is a tonne of nails, screws, pieces of metal, pieces of wood and cigarette butts in our soil outside the house. We're doing all our own landscaping so what is there is what we will get. However is it acceptable to ask all this be cleaned before handover? We have a one year old and as it is he won't be able to use any of our backyard space. Thank you Re: Nails and metal in soil... 3Oct 29, 2017 6:40 pm Our situation might have been a bit different because we had a whole bunch of topsoil scraped and piled in the back of our lot with a view to re-distributing it all at the end of the build. So we went with the assumption that no one would think to remove all the metal and nails and other building rubbish before the skid-steer guy came to redistribute the soil at the end.... and we cleaned it all up ourselves. We have two kids as well and again took it into our own hands to clean up around the build site. Glass, colorbond steel shards, and nails, even timber and wood shavings... we did have our beautiful six-year-old son help quite a bit with his toy diggers etc. Result... a clean or mostly clean pile of dirt around our house... and the topsoil re-distributed without any known effort by the builders to make sure the build site was clean before it was redistributed and the driveway put in. We are happy that we did it ourselves. It's our home after all. The tradies don't get that unlless it was their own too. We put down top soil over most of it, so only notice it really when I dig holes to plant things. Always wear gloves just in case. But can't hurt to ask the builder. Fine with me... just let 'em step in with some affordable (but good) gear... 12 5485 Hi Building Expert, Thank you for the feedback, much appreciated, there is also a code of conduct for building surveyors which they need to follow as well. I am looking… 4 3671 I am not sure whether Perth has its own way of doing things in regards to this. Most of Perth has class A (sandy soil), except for some areas near rivers or hills. 2 13098 |
