In Victoria, Austral has a large site in Craigieburn (on Craigieburn Road East, Brickmaker lane, quite aptly named). Austral is in the process of completing a new factory that is about 3 times larger than the existing one. Not sure if this will help with quality but will sure help with quantity. Re: Austral vs Boral bricks 6Feb 10, 2007 8:05 am Hi, Great question!
Gypsy do you mean that the bricks have like salt or white powdery stuff on them or that they are really mouldy... I find that quite worrying! Could it be from the dry conditions, or perhaps something in the soil? We are assigned Boral bricks for our house, although Austral are available - but I don't really want to have to spend extra to upgrade bricks. Anyone elses thoughts??? ~Ray. I would suggest unless you are rendering, brick choice is right up there. They can have a massive affect on how your house will look. I would concentrate more on the style of bricks as most bricks will outlast your home by a mile. If Austral has what you want or Boral or someone else, go to them. Incedently a common problem with bricks is when cleaning them, sometimes the chemicals react and produce undesireable results. Probably more to do with the cleaning chemicals than the bricks. We are even paying an extra $1000 for the mortar to be flush as this will bring out the characteristics of the bricks best. (a sort of battered look) This is a lot to pay but we think it will add to the character of the house - and that will add value. regards 3xb Re: Austral vs Boral bricks 8Feb 12, 2007 9:49 am I know what you mean 3XB... I have to say that I haven't seen ANY bricks that I thought "aren't they nice" - it's more a matter of "yeah" or "nah". There will be something from each of the selections that we can live with, as really - how much time do you spend looking at the outside of your house? I know it needs to be aesthetically pleasing and suit the overall look, but I don't think it's worth paying thousands extra to pick another colour that I don't like any better. I am concerned if the bricks are of poor quality - and would be prepared to pay extra to ensure a quality product (but don't tell them I said that - they'll try convince me I need to upgrade!). We are already paying over $2000 to have brick infills above the side and rear windows instead of the ugly cement sheet.
Ray. Second Time 'Round Re: Austral vs Boral bricks 9Feb 12, 2007 10:39 am FTR,
I usually build with one eye on the investment value of what I am building. This ensures that if I need to sell, I can get my money back and even make a bit which can put toward my next home. Most pics in real estates are of the front fascade and this is what drives people to go have a look. It is the first thing that people see when they visit you and forms the first impression. The only other areas of intrest in a house are the kitchen, bathrooms and the yard. Everything else is just boxes. I have to agree that most bricks are uninspiring which is why I go to great lengths to find something that is a bit more than ok. I usually go with something a bit out there and try to make it fit in. I doubt that anyone would actually notice the brick as much as the effect that is created. A brick fascade is something that cannot be easily changed other than to render over it. Worth getting it right. 3xb Re: Austral vs Boral bricks 10Feb 14, 2007 10:27 pm Hi,
I have to agree that the right choice of bricks for your home is vital, and can make or break it, and remember they will be the first thing people see. If possible try to get a list of homes in your area built with your selection of brick, and view them at several different times of the day, as the colour can vary in changing light. I found it much easier to rule out certain choices when l saw them on a large scale, as in a whole house instead of just a tiny display wall. The right brick is out there! Re: Austral vs Boral bricks 11Feb 22, 2007 9:26 am You have certainly made me think long and hard about this, and I thank you for that. I have found some lovely (and I never thought I'd say that word!) bricks. They are "category 3" rather than the standard "category 1" included, and we have a figure of about $1500 to upgrade. I went and got a list of houses of the bricks we were considering, and the ones I was going to settle for are just AWFUL on the house we saw - far too dark; very brown. We also had a look at the addresses of our new choice of brick and all of the houses we saw are beautiful. It definitely determined our decision.
Thank you so much for making me reconsider! Ray. Second Time 'Round Re: Austral vs Boral bricks 12Feb 22, 2007 2:43 pm Quote:"We are even paying an extra $1000 for the mortar to be flush"
Flush joints would be the most popular way of finishing off brickwork here but it doesn't cost any extra as all face brickwork has to be finished off in some way and flush jointing is no harder than any other (raking, ironing etc)( method.Maybe the extra cost is because of the use of off white cement and white sand?Regards Terry DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair to do it properly you need to dig out the garden and waterproof the outside of the wall.
