Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 26, 2017 9:14 am Hello! I've been trawling this site for a while now enjoying the wonderful stories [with some trials and tribulations] of various build journeys. I thought I would start my own mainly as a therapeutic means to maintain my own sanity through this process but also because I've only found a couple of folk building with Dixon and thought sharing might help if anyone is considering it. My husband and I are building a two-storey home on a 752sqm block in Griffin. The two-storey is to capture the city and mountain views available at that level. It's also the reason for the large windows in the plan for upstairs! We've had a long process from buying the land in March this year to now. We initially went with another builder but the cost ending up being far more than we were originally quoted so looked elsewhere. Dixon are a bit formulaic in approach but overall they have been very accommodating and even offered a rebate of the cost of the soil test etc that we had paid to the previous builder! We have just settled on a design that we are very happy with and signed the contract. I'm still figuring out the photo thing but hopefully I've attached our plans at this stage below. We totally underestimated the cost as well, there are so many things you don't think of, or would assume be included but are not. meanwhile - nice plan I love the idea of having the living areas upstairs, and the large windows will provide a lot of light and breezes - look forward to your journey Re: Brisbane Build with Dixon 3Aug 26, 2017 12:28 pm Great plan Joggles. Very exciting. The admin part is the most painful lol. We are coming up to the end of our build near Brisbane. We sold our last home which was on 3000sqm block in the Glasshouse Mountains, so coming closer to the city we were a bit shellshocked by the size of some of the blocks on offer in various developments. We knew we would have to downsize on block but there's a difference between knowing it and then seeing it! However, this block was a find and we're very happy with it - although it did still cause a few design hiccups. It's a bit of a 'muffin' in shape. 32sqm to the front and 26 across the back. Just started watching your thread too. Love the butler's pantry and colour selections! Really wanted a walk-in pantry too but had to reign the spend in when we went up a storey and added the 2.7m ceilings up and down to take advantage of the view. Also looking forward to seeing your journey! The admin part is the most painful lol. We are coming up to the end of our build near Brisbane. Thanks Tamara! I've actually sneakily been watching your thread for a while. I've now become officially a 'homeone stalker'! I have to admit I sighed with some jealousy when I saw the size of your block! I actually had to look up where the New Beith Forest area was so I've learned something new too! Looks beautiful! We sold up our last home on 3000sqm in the Glasshouse Mountains, so coming in closer to the city and the smaller blocks was a bit of a 'mindbender' for us initially. We're very happy with our compromise though for this build. The ultimate dream is still country acreage but that will be the next [and final] build - but not probably until we retire! Absolutely love that master suite and pantry! The tile colours look amazing - really like the rectangular shape too! Looking forward to seeing how it all comes together for you! You're nearly there! Thank you We are getting excited. Only a few weeks to go. I have to admit I was getting a bit worried about the colours all going together. I just chose colours I liked without much thought into how they all looked together lol. I am really happy with how it is coming together though Can't wait to see your start! Also looking forward to seeing your journey! high ceilings will be very nice definitely worth the upgrade i think. Will definitely give your house presence as well. We ended up choosing a smaller house plan to make sure we got everything we wanted (well most things) plus have a bit of a backyard as well. Our block is 500sqm which we were pretty happy of finding, so 700sqm is huge to me! Glasshouse mountains is such a beautiful area. But now you'll be close to Ikea and Costco. haha! dangerous! Still working through a number of annoying smaller issues like electrical (drawings keep coming back incorrect) and smaller details like fittings. We were also forced to tint our windows for efficiency as well, so hopefully that's the end of the unexpected surprises. A lot of our estate are well on there way already, so we are a bit behind. have you arranged your colour appointment? Re: Brisbane Build with Dixon 8Aug 28, 2017 5:34 pm gr8ly Joggles Thanks gr8ly! My daughter and I have made many trips to both Costco and IKEA already I see a few more ahead of us yet! It certainly is the case with building a house that it's an expense that keeps on exponentially developing more expense! A work friend of my husband's mentioned their concern with flat profile power points and how they'd made sure these were selected as part of their electrical options - which of course cost more. Didn't even occur to my husband and I as a consideration, we've too many other 'details' to count the cost of ahead of power points! Each to their own though, if anything reading through the journeys of others on this site has shown me, it's that there are so many differing ideas of style and design out there and we all have our wishlist of lovelies that we would like to include! Hope your difficulties with the electrical are sorted soon and that there are no more hidden surprises! We have indeed completed our colour selections and once I've taken a few pics with a bit more clarity I will post them up. Have a great week! Just finished my week of work and now time to enjoy some H1 an family time. Hope to see lots of great progress without any major hiccups along the way. Other than the slow and steady pace of our local Dixons builders, we are pretty pleased with our soon-to-be new home. We have finally finalised our electrical and colours now.. so im hoping it wont be too long till the next phase of this long journey i sometimes regret getting on. Should hopefully be worth it in the end Re: Brisbane Build with Dixon 11Sep 09, 2017 8:21 pm Checking in... waiting on your selections! Hope you are having a good weekend! Looking forward to seeing your colour selections and a start date, in regards to power points and costly little upgrades don't stress them, once you move in to the house they seem so unimportant. Looking forward to following along Re: Brisbane Build with Dixon 13Sep 10, 2017 11:01 pm Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Front view of our design. We added the facade porch because it looked a bit like a large rectangular box without it! Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Some of our colour selection. Roof = Colorbond Monument Cladding = Equivalent of 'Surf Mist'. Guttering = Colorbond Terrain Bricks = PGH Savannah with off-white mortar. Render to porch pillars = Equivalent of 'Surf Mist'. We hope the 'Terrain' guttering will provide a framing line for the house and connect with the timber-look planking of the garage door {Mediterranean Caoba] and the timber entry door. Of course, this is all in our heads as we haven't seen anything with this palette together! Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ This example of Savannah pic is a bit dark - the bricks are a pinky-brown colour. [Weirdly our official colour selection document with Dixon - says 'pinky-brown' in the description!] A bit later with this post than I had hoped, too many assignments to correct! Looking forward to following along Thanks Tribe! I see that you have been through quite a bit to get your latest build underway. Fingers crossed for you that it goes smoothly from here. You might have read from my first post that we started with a different builder as well and changed to ridiculous costings! We've also been through a few designs with Dixon before we settled on our current one. I look forward to following your new thread when you're ready to 'lock n load'! Love your design and colour selections for the outside! How did you go with the internal colours? One thing I didn't realise was with the WIR & the robes in he other rooms, we went the wire but weren't told that you don't get wire shelves. It's just a hanging wire shelf up high. However if we had of chose the timber/wood whatever it's classed as we would have. Lol now we are chasing down everywhere trying to find cheap draws or something to put into the boys robes How are you finding the experience so far?? Can't wait to see it all come together for you Re: Brisbane Build with Dixon 18Sep 15, 2017 11:09 pm Nice selections! I think those colours will make the outside look quite regal and Victoria! Especially as you have a two-storey! We have been so busy as well... don't even have time to stop and browse the H1 forums! Will keep my eyes peeled for more updates and progress from yours! We are signed, sealed and ready to started! Commencement letter was sent from our bank to Dixon today. So I guess now we wait to see how long before it all gets underway. Thought I pop up a few more photos of the land and aspect to give an idea of why we are building a two-storey in this area. I've also included some colour selections we've made for the interior, including one of our flooring ideas. If you've seen any of the Dixon Resort inclusions before, then the bathrooms' colour palettes will come as no surprise. However, we were quite happy with these colour combinations. We are looking at vinyl planks for our kitchen, dining, and lounge area upstairs and in our entrance hallway downstairs. Karndean Hartford is our pick. Love the rustic warmth of the combination of greys with a touch of brown. Have also been out and about with the husband looking at possible lighting options - just to get an idea. Our work schedules usually preclude joint visits so I jumped at the chance and took him along to Beacon Lighting to see whether anything I liked, he might like! We actually agreed on most so we're off to a promising start! But more on that later! Can't wait to see it all come together for you Thanks for the tip re the robes Fleabee! Will look into that! Good luck with the search for the drawers. I know you can get timber-like drawers at IKEA for about $30 per drawer to fit into a frame which then fits into your wardrobe. Or you could make use of a hanging storage with 7 compartments [I think it's called SVIRA] and they're about $20. Might be ok until you find something else you like! Re the 'experience' - getting to this point has actually taken a lot, lot, lot longer than we had thought. So it has been rather frustrating so far, but we are now starting to feel like we are moving forward so YAY!
