Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 25, 2008 10:20 am Hi,
We have just bought a block of land in an established area. We have a footpath out the front and the driveway is on the left. What I would like to know is it possible to add another driveway on the right? Ie. Dig up the kerb and put a new driveway in. If this is possible what needs to be considered? ie. Council approval, fees etc? Has anyone done this before? Thanks in advance. Regards, Lachlan Re: 2nd Driveway 3Aug 25, 2008 1:43 pm i think you can do it, but would need approval from the council. When my parents did their 2nd driveway, we had to go to the council to submit our plans and they had to approve it.
But if you are doing it in an estate, they mite have stricter rules against this. Thuy Re: 2nd Driveway 4Aug 25, 2008 3:36 pm I've widened a driveway and looking at doing it again for our recent purchase.
Our council requires a permit which is a fairly nominal fee, they provide a drawing showing the dimensions, kerb types, reinforcement etc. They also required that the contractor have public indemnity insurance, council were able to provide a list of contractors which had PI, and were therefore "pre-approved". If you have any services (phone, power, etc) where the driveway is then you need to make special provision....best to avoid the services completely. mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: 2nd Driveway 5Aug 25, 2008 3:59 pm We changed our crossover/driveway when we did a reno in Melbourne about 7 yrs ago. With the Monash Council, it was at that time about $1250 all up. The contractor was supposed to dig up the old crossover and rebuild it as a kerb as well as building the new crossover.......but in the end, they didn't break up the old one?? We didn't question it and thought it was great - so we had 2 crossovers which worked out even better for us!
But yes, you need to go through Council, they will send someone out to do the quote for you and then you have the option to go ahead or decline. Hope that helps? Re: 2nd Driveway 6Aug 25, 2008 5:47 pm get your concretor to call council , inspector comes out and marks out the new crossover
the concretor can get specs faxed to them from council to work to. last instatement i did was $50 odd dollars inc permit and 2 x inspections from city of casey Da Vinci Outdoor Living Architectural landscaping http://www.davincioutdoor.com To my understanding early saw cuts are to control shrinkage cracks, so doing them now would be pointless.
