Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 04, 2017 8:50 pm Ok wanting to build Simonds but have heard they use foam in their slabs to cut costs and also they use thinner wood for the frame .... is this right?! Re: Simonds and feedback 2Jul 04, 2017 8:58 pm I think the foam is for a Waffle Pod type slab, and is used by many. Maybe ask what sort of slab is included in the base spec, and what extra you need to pay for the correct engineered slab for your land after you receive the earthworks/engineering costs. The simonds builds I have seen around here (SA) all seem to have the same sized wood frame as everyone else from what I can tell. Building a Fairmont Custom in Seaford Meadows Our Build Thread Re: Simonds and feedback 3Jul 04, 2017 9:04 pm I think most builders use waffle pod slabs (the foam), the other type that is sometimes used is a raft slab. Maybe do some googling, there's pros and cons to both types I believe. Not sure about the thinner wood, that seems unlikely. I'm sort of wondering who told you these things?? I doubt Simmonds would get away with using thinner wood than what is required by the Australian standards. Re: Simonds and feedback 4Jul 04, 2017 10:41 pm The thinner wood might be placing stud walls as legally far apart as possible, also there is a huge difference in the quality of wood you can use, good chippy with experience will know this.
