Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 27, 2017 11:51 pm Hi I am worried about the soil the builder did when he did his cut and fill, he dumped the excess soil over the front and it is all loose and lumps of clay just roll down it. The soil is 2 mt high and he never compressed it if you walk on it you sink down and it looks like is cracking. Builder say no landscaping is included in the contract, but is this landscaping? I don't think so, surely he has to leave it in a safe way? I don't fancy paying thousands to retain it ,it was never mentioned ever. You will find it's up to you to work out if you want a sloping yard or not and hire someone (or do it yourself like we did) to retain it. Your contour plans would have shown you would end up with a rise at the front with your cut and fill if you look at slab height intended and what your land currently was. Sadly he is right, all he has to do to make council happy is smooth it out which they do at the end - it's up to you to retain it. ~Shellby~ GJ Bridgewater 203 11/3/2016 - Site Work Started 29/9/2016 - Handover 142 Work Days 6 Work Days Over https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=80174 Re: Worry over soil around slab 3Jun 28, 2017 12:54 pm It's a bit disappointing a retaining wall was not part of the design to hold up the fill that there to hold up your house. Wilson homes did something similar to a friend of ours although it was the cut side (so more compacted than your loose fill) that required retaining and their unsealed driveway was washing away without it. They said it wasn't part of the quote so I think it's their normal practice; if you don't pick it up in the plans it's not their problem as long as the fill meets code for the home. Our friends ended up paying them extra to have a ~1 metre retaining wall installed. Not recommended! The image presented is for a sublevel area.
