Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 20, 2008 2:51 pm Hi guys,
Want to install a desk. But a desk top that sits on a horizontal batten on the wall. A noggin will need to go in before plaster to support this batten. So question is : how far up the wall from the concrete slab should the top edge of the noggin sit, taking into account depth of carpet pile & underlay? Is there a standard measurement or should we take a guess ? I intend having a carpet with a low profile eg twist, no loop pile. Thanks for any suggestions. I'm guessing studs are installed at a particular position to satsify buidling codes ? Is this installation height therefore at a correct distance from the slab, for the batten to be fixed at the right spot ? Your timber for the benchtop to sit on will run across several of these. Screw in where appropriate and you can have the bench at whatever height you want. Re: Noggin height 6Aug 20, 2008 7:05 pm Buy a stud-finder, they're cheap enough. If the house was built in the last 20 years or so they'll be at 450mm centres.
As Al said, simply screw batten/bugle screws into each stud. If you batten is 35mm thick (eg. 70x35,90x35) use 75mm batten screws. When we put in our noggins, we used framing timber. So std noggin material....and put them in at about 800mm high from the concrete slab.
If you position the noggins with the thicker side of the timber running vertically instead of horizontally as like the normal studs it will give you a bit of play for the positioning of the height. So just turn the noggins 45 degrees and you'll be right. I've been asked to dig up a photo of the noggin layout before plaster so will post a pic for you here if you want? On top of that we also used some 45 degree aluminium to support it around the walls and attach it firmly to the plaster/noggins. Hmm i might actually raise a thread just in case anyone wants to see it in more detail.... Good Luck!
