Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 17, 2008 7:52 pm We are building the newstead 27 with PD and are really happy with the house - except for the lack of storage space! Apart from the wardrobes and kitchen cupboards, there is only one cupboard in the entire house - a little one in the laundry. Anyway we were hoping to build in a linen cupboard close to the main bathroom, and because of where it is going there is space for more cupboards which would be handy as well.
Has anyone had any experiences with these sorts of variations? Here is a picture of our idea. I want the fourth cupboard to open into the bedroom rather than into the rumpus so we don't have issues with obstructing the door with furniture but OH likes it this way. I am open to ideas and opinions! I added heaps of cupboards and altered walls, but that wasn't with PD, with another major.
What you are proposing is not major work so I can't see it would be a problem. If it is a problem that would worry me. Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Our head office person is really good so I don't expect we will have issues being able to do it, I just hope its not going to cost too much or we realise after we move in we have lost too much space! Re: Varying floor plans 4Aug 17, 2008 8:06 pm Variations like this are done by builders all the time so you should have no problem with that, almost everyone changes something from their original plan, and this is a fairly minor change.
It will certainly be workable as long as you don't mind losing that bit of space from the rumpus room, of course that depends how big the room is and what you intend using it for. I don't think haveing the door open into B4 would be good though as it would get in the way of the door into the room. I can see that there is a BIR in that bedroom, how about just moveing that to another wall in the room, if you think it will be a problem in current position. I would actually suggest the wall which backs onto the toilet, good as a sound barrier from toilet into bedroom. Or the wall which backs onto the laundry, for the same reason. I don't think we could move the BIR in bedroom 4, just because where it is is slotted into the kitchen so it doesn't really interfere with the space of the room. Good point about the toilet being right there though, it would be ideal to have it on that wall but then I don't know what we would do with the cavity where it was! The rumpus isn't huge - 3630 * 4000, but losing 50cm shouldn't affect us too much I don't think... I'm glad everyone agrees it is minor and won't give us too much trouble! joles - four linen cupboards! Lucky you! Re: Varying floor plans 7Aug 17, 2008 8:55 pm I have another suggestion (did anyone warn you that you will get bombarded with opinions and suggestions if you post a floor plan on here?? ), anyway if you want to keep the BIR where it is in B4, why don't you have sliding wardrobe doors instead of ones which open outwards as shown in your plan.
Alternatively, if you do decide to move the BIR to another wall, you could just set the kitchen back into the cavity and have more bench space along the wall backing onto the rumpus room. (of course this would lose some bedroom space as wardrobe would be taken out of cavity and come into the room space on one of the side walls, but it looks a good size room which could afford to do this.) Actually, if it was me, I would change all the BIR doors to sliding doors, I think they are such space savers compared to hinged doors. I'm the complete opposite Helyn. I changed all mine from sliding to hinged as I like to open the wardrobe up and see the whole thing. sliding doors always come off their hinges. Maybe that's just me. Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Varying floor plans 9Aug 17, 2008 9:58 pm OK, Joles, to each their own.
Isn't seeing half the contents at a time good enough for you?? Quote: sliding doors always come off their hinges. Maybe that's just me. Do you mean off their tracks? Well, I've had BIR's in current house for many years, all sliding doors and that's never happened to me or even to my kids. Maybe some people are just more clumsy than others Re: Varying floor plans 10Aug 17, 2008 10:19 pm Thanks Helyn - I love suggestions! Sometimes I just find I have been looking at it too long to see it, if you know what I mean!
The house I am in now has sliding wardrobe doors and I am not a fan. They do fall off their tracks but I think thats because they are quite old and unusually tall doors. That bedroom (or bed 2) is going to be a spare anyway, so I am just hoping to get a queen bed in there and the robe will be used for storage/ overflow from my WIR I think moving the wardrobe would be pushing it for space, though it would be great if we could. I also want to make the master WIR larger (still trying to convince OH on that one ) Re: Varying floor plans 11Aug 18, 2008 9:12 am You could do the sliders as mirrored sliders, we had them at our last house and they are to heavy to come off rails
It is always handy having a full length mirror in the house and it makes your area appear bigger. You would probably reflect alot of good light coming from in the bathroom and toilet across the hall also.
