Building A New House
Mar 27, 2017 9:50 pm
Hi, we're finally committing to a thread for our new home!!
Having stalked the Homeone forums for a while we thought it time to share our journey.
We sold our previous home late last year, expecting to stay with family for a few weeks until we purchased a new home. That was until we fell in love with a block of land in Myponga, to say we jumped at the chance would be an understatement. Driving past that amazing piece of land is the only thing keeping our sanity alive, throughout the building process and our suddenly extended stay with family.
We initially paid a deposit and signed up with a certain builder (starts with River and rhymes with bum) to build one of their designs. But several "mistakes" and "oversights" depleted all our trust and we decided to look elsewhere. So we spent the Xmas holidays dragging our kids through many, many, many, many, many, many, MANY display homes (which they thoroughly enjoyed ). We've now drawn our own custom plan, taking all the bits and pieces from various builders that we liked and came up with this...

We drew up a rough sketch of what we wanted, along with a "Wish list" of features and emailed it to several builders for quotes. After about three weeks (and lots of comparison tables on excel and checking reviews on Homeone), we made our choice of builder. Fairmont were competitive on price and we were fortunate to score the Kitchen, Bathroom and Free AirCon upgrades!!! Our sales consultant has been great, we knew what we wanted and he helped us achieve just that.
We signed the contract in late January and soil testing was done within the week. In early March we received the contracts (with a bonus dishwasher thrown in) and have just received our footings variations and bank-pack. The soil in Myponga is horrendous but thankfully (in part thanks to "starts with River, rhymes with bum) we over-budgeted for footings and site-works.
We're off to selections in a couple of weeks and have a pretty good idea on what we want. Then it's just a matter of council approval (we got the letter today advising the plans had been submitted) and sign-off by the bank.
We cannot speak highly enough of our sales consultant, he's terrific. We're the most cynical first-time-builders ever but Michael keeps pleasantly surprising us.

Nice Janbo, I read on your thread that you're building in Port Willunga. It's beautiful there we just sold our place in Aldinga Beach. It's amazing how quick those frames spring up!

The little sign is exciting
Nice scenery in the background. Will you get to keep any of those views or are others building around you?

We will have neighbours either side but the block behind is zoned non-residential - it's the edge of the developement. So time will tell what happens with that block... until then we've got the Fleurieu Milk cows for neighbours

Selctions pack received and booked in! Final plans need some very minor adjusting (the laundry window height, ensuite niche size and moving of a down pipe). Did anyone have any nasty surprises at the final builders interview?

Hi there- awesome to see another Myponga build! We moved in exactly 12 months ago in the same development - best choice we ever made to build in Myponga. It's so beautiful! I'm kinda envious to watch all the new houses go up - I loved watching our place take shape.

Selections are done! I am so glad that we had visited both supreme kitchens and direct interiors previously. We were super organised for direct interiors and they were really helpful I thought we were organised for supreme but there were still some last minute decisions! But again, they were great I am completely exhausted - Pooraka is so far away!

It is far away, but they are very specific and good. We really love our kitchen. We thought we prepared too, and even went there a couple of times, but even still there were a couple of last minute changes.

So I realised today that we took hardly any photos yesterday! But we've spent this evening going over our choices (and over them again and again!) And I have a few photos to post
So for our bathroom:
Floor tile: roman liquorice matt 300x300 with charred ash grout.
Wall tile: Eur plain white gloss 300x400 with ultra white grout and laid horizontally.
Feature tile: to the entire back wall of shower - Infinity Centris in Ming with ultra white grout.
Benchtop: Pure Calcite
Vanity cupboards: Sublime Teak
The ensuite will be the same but we are having a niche in the shower that is the height of the feature tile and will run from wall to wall. The feature till will be in the back of the niche
The floor tile is much darker than we initially wanted (I really wanted a soft grey). But it was the one we liked the most... and it does go lovely with our carpet and laminate and it also is a great contrast against the ming.

For our kitchen:
Benchtop: Sublime Teak
Splash back: white subway gloss 100 x 300 with ultra white grout laid brick bond.
We are having a dishwasher and microwave provision in the island bench and overhead cupboards over the fridge. We are going to have tiling to the ceiling for the splash back with one of the curved glass rangehoods (which we'll have installed after handover).
