Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 23, 2017 4:42 pm We are currently cut and filling our sloping block so that it is level, i would like to avoid having to pay extra when the house is being built, for drop edgebeams. 2 questions: -what are drop edge beams and when and why are they required -what can we do to our block to avoid having to get drop edge beams? (Family member is an excavater/earth mover so we have the opportunity to get whatever we need done to the block very cheaply) Thanks Re: What is a drop edge beam and when and why are they requi 2Mar 23, 2017 5:07 pm We have a DEB on one side of our build. I think with a sloping site you either retain the land to make block flat to build on or you incorporate a DEB during construction. We went with a DEB as it meant we didn't need to allow for an increased setback with retaining close to the boundary. This is great info, we are going to completley level and retain the property so i gues that means it is unlikely we will need a drop edge beam, well hopefully not after all the work Re: What is a drop edge beam and when and why are they requi 4Mar 23, 2017 8:03 pm Although you might save the need for drop edge beams, digging a sloping block until it's completely level could mean that you will need retaining walls instead. Hi yep we are getting two retaining walls put in to have two seperate levels one for the house one for garden and extra lawn (the block is 1300sqm) To build on the block it needed to be level regardless we are just lucky that we can save a fair bit of money due to the contacts we have in the industry, otherwise it wouldnt have been possible.
