Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Our Custom Hamptons Inspired Home - We are slabbed! 321Jun 29, 2017 10:02 pm So we met with the builder yesterday to discuss all our rock excavation and removal costs. Unfortunately not much could be done about it. Our sore point about the drainers digging out so much rock at 5 x the price of the excavators could not be avoided. I won't go into detail here but suffice to say everything was explained to us and seems reasonable, so we just have to accept it. Most of our rock was located at the front of our block which presented a problem for our edge beams. Our engineer stipulated that they could not be partially founded on rock and partially on soil. It had to be entirely one or the other. Hence they had to dig the beams much deeper at the back than anticipated which meant using more concrete. That's added another $6.5K on top of the $15K! Builder really felt for us though and has kindly waived our $2K additional window costs and also some of the additional rock removal costs after the channels for the beams were dug out. Small mercies. Bricks have been delivered on site and they should start the double brick garage wall shortly. Meanwhile the frame is being constructed in the factory. Progress is a bit annoyingly slow but I'm sure it will all go up quickly once it's delivered to site. Gonna order our splashback tiles tomorrow before sale ends at Beaumont Tiles, so can save a bit there. Definitely decided on the 300x75 size. Hope everyone else's builds are professing well! Good that your builder is listening and appreciating that there is not a bottomless pit of money. Re: Our Custom Hamptons Inspired Home - We are slabbed! 323Jun 30, 2017 6:32 pm That's a bummer it's costing so much more but at least they're working with you to try and make everything come together! In keeping with the modern/ Hamptons/ coastal look we are going for, we decided on a few must have early on (read in "upgrades" here LOL). It was important to us that you get this flavour as soon as you walk in the door - yes first impressions are everything! All of the new Hamptons style homes have gorgeous timber stairs stained and painted in white. At one point when we were trying to cut back costs, Hubby dared to suggest we go with cheaper stairs. Well no guess who won that one! For me, it would not be a Hamptons home without the right stairs. Along with the stairs, we will be having white timber cladding on each side of the stairs as shown in the pics below. We also plan to have a large feature pendant, though we will need to save for this one cause they cost $$$! This is something we are going to do ourselves as we have family who lay floors for a living. We are yet to decide on the actual product as still weighting up laminate vs engineered boards, though I think we are leaning towards the latter. Our builder will kindly "pin" on the skirtings so we can lay the floorboards underneath the skirtings and won't need to have that unsightly quad. The only place we'll have quad is around the kitchen benches as this can't be helped with kitchen needing to go in first. As for colours, I don't want anything too light. I love that french grey reclaimed oak look, and possibly something a little darker. Prefer slightly longer, wider planks also. FLOORING INSPIRATION: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Walls will be a light grey of sorts, similar to the above. In my research, colours such as Solver's Kitty Grey or Dulux's Tranquil Retreat are common choices. The former has a bit of beige in it, in certain light, which can bring warmth to a room, whereas the latter is cooler in tone. As I mentioned earlier my builder uses Taubman's, so I am torn whether to choose a colour in this range or stick with a more common colour. For now we have chosen Taubman's Marble Mist which is very similar to Kitty Gret, but I think we'll end of going with something less greige, as I prefer to keep with cooler tones. Boy I already feel sorry for whoever our poor painter will be. I am going to drive him nuts with lots of sample pots!!! Skirtings will be slightly larger than standard (18mm) and a bit traditional looking. Lastly, our internal doors will have a traditional feel. Can't wait to see your home come together Thanks ABuild. We went to a flooring place on the weekend and thought I'd found the perfect match. I was thinking this is it, it's perfect.... except it was $180 per metre for just the product only!!! Ah maybe not. We did though take advantage of the stocktake sales and ordered our F&P cooking appliances. Ended up getting them from e&s trading. They were out of stock of the Bosch dishwasher I was after, so they gave me the next model up for the same price and it hasn't even been released yet! The only thing I am a little disappointed about is our ovens. Had a 90L model in mind but apparently that's exclusive to the Good Guys so had to settle on the 85L which is not as tall inside. All in all we walked out thinking, wow, we've saved heaps... until we realised they'd left one of our ovens off the bill! (we are getting 2). While it wasn't as much as we thought, we still managed to save about $1K Our 37sq Custom Hamptons Inspired Home: http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=86931 Re: Our Custom Hamptons Inspired Home - We are slabbed! 328Jul 04, 2017 11:15 pm I wish my wife was as forgiving and negotiable about oven selections as your are.... Well after our unexpected $20K bill I am trying to save elsewhere. Secretly hoping though by the time we are due for delivery I might be able to get the one I want instead seeing as they are the same dimensions.... I had one in the last house German made. It was amazing. Went with an under bench model, made in Germany. I think this is it. It's predecessor which I originally wanted had great reviews on Choice and a number of websites. So hopefully they haven't changed too much with the new model. http://www.bosch-home.com.au/productlis ... h60cmwidth Our 37sq Custom Hamptons Inspired Home: http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=86931 Re: Our Custom Hamptons Inspired Home - We are slabbed! 332Jul 04, 2017 11:40 pm You can't go wrong with Bosch for dishwashers honestly. As long as the German made with stainless base it will just keep on going, and so silent it's great. Re: Our Custom Hamptons Inspired Home - We are slabbed! 333Jul 05, 2017 12:03 am Great news on the savings on the ovens Dani and the dishwasher looks great, we had a look at the Good Guys and Harvey Norman recently and my husband originally wanted a Miele dishwasher but I think the Bosch are actually much more solid so I think I've bought him around to the idea of a different brand! GG and HN often mark up products before a sale so you think you're getting a good discount but more often you're not. I know because I have been tracking prices for months! Their response: well things just go up. Ah no. Not if the model is getting older and is about to be superseded.
