Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 14, 2008 2:54 pm Hey guys
Well I got out to take a photo of our bricks today and from what I can see the mortar used on this house was a yellowish colour - what would you call this? i thought it looked fine with the bricks, and am now thinking I may save the $1000 as I wouldn't need the white mortar that PD offer. Does anyone know the colour of mortar that PD offer - I know they offer the white and the natural - I thought this was a grey colour though, and I don't think that would suit the bricks as much. I love the white mortar but think it wouldn't make a huge difference to my lighter bricks like it does with dark chocolate bricks and such. Here is a photo of my bricks - what do you think? What colour mortar would you use? The photos below show the yellow mortar that they have used, while I prefer the white, I'm thinking the bricks will only really be on the top story, as the bottom half is rendered, the side of the house which you wouldn't see, and the back of the house which again wouldn't be a huge difference. The bricks are much lighter than they appear in this pic too, but anyway http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r72/Mias_Mummy/P5311117.jpg My karma ran over your dogma Re: Mortar questions 2Aug 14, 2008 3:02 pm Bricks look great, Bel - will look lovely with all of your other ext colours. I don't know what that mortar is, and I'm not even sure which ones PD offer, as we immediately chose off-white (as you say, the contrast is really good for the dark bricks) but I DO know that you can get a grey mortar - don't know if it's an upgrade , or not (probably, knowing PD ) Sorry, feeling extremely cynical today, as YET again no action at our place...among other things!
Hope someone can point you in the right direction re-mortar, Bel! Solidarity, not solidity.......The Lexicon of Life Re: Mortar questions 3Aug 14, 2008 3:05 pm I think the grey mortar is standard Petal But I don't think the grey would go with the rest of the bricks, so I'm wondering if they offer the yellow....might shoot off an email to my poor CSC and ask!!
Don't worry about being cynacil, I would be far worse!!! My karma ran over your dogma Re: Mortar questions 4Aug 14, 2008 3:06 pm Bel I'd go the white mortar. My bricks are light and I still upgraded.
I think the white would look really good with those bricks. What type of finish are you going for with the mortar as this could influence your decision also? Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Mortar questions 5Aug 14, 2008 3:09 pm Mortar finish? Ahhh I have no idea!! What would you suggest?
I think the rolled or raked....actually I have no idea, the one that is in a bit, make the bricks appear lighter - whats that name? My karma ran over your dogma Re: Mortar questions 6Aug 14, 2008 3:14 pm We are having flush, so that it sits level with the bricks, but there are a number of finshes available.
I think white looks great with a flush finish but maybe not so important with a raked or rolled finish as there'll be shadowing anyway. But if you are going flush, I'd definitely go white but it sounds like you're not so.. Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Mortar questions 8Aug 14, 2008 3:25 pm haywgl Ahhh yes I see what you mean, hmmm maybe I should go flush with white mortar...would this lighten the overall appearance of the bricks? Umm... I think so... ....oh I don't know .....I just like how it looks ... I'm really not sure....oh the pressure!!! I'd hate to say it lightens it when it doesn't but I think it does. And I'd hate you to change your mortar finish and then hate it. I'm crap at externals!!! Why are you even listening to me?? Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Mortar questions 9Aug 14, 2008 3:57 pm Look bel I don't really know what I'm talking about either, so grain of salt and all that LOL, but could the lighter mortar have the effect of making the bricks look darker? Due to the contrast btw bricks and mortar? Don't know but just a thought I had Re: Mortar questions 10Aug 14, 2008 4:01 pm Quote: Umm... Bel, I'm a fan of off-white mortar... and dark-coloured bricks. Although there was a time that we were also considering a lighter brick - the Newport of Austral... with an off-white mortar. IMO though, if you have rendered area and only small portion of your facade would have bricks, then I would probably go for natural mortar and use the money elsewhere. It depends on the over-all look you want to achieve. If you want the bricks to stand out (is it an upgraded brick?), then go for the off-white mortar. Otherwise, if you want the render to stand out and the bricks to complement ther ender, then go for a natural mortar. Wish you have a clearer photo of your brick.. so we could see whether the natural or the grey mortar would look better. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping! Re: Mortar questions 11Aug 14, 2008 4:31 pm Hi
Cant comment much on mortar colour as i am myself confused. But what colour are your bricks, i like the colour a lot Re: Mortar questions 12Aug 14, 2008 6:27 pm Thanks guys
Jo!! I think we will go with the light coloured (white) mortar, unless I get advised otherwise at my colour appointment I'll try and get a clearer picture of the brick VJ My karma ran over your dogma Re: Mortar questions 13Aug 14, 2008 7:26 pm Bel, i'm probably too late, but can't you contact the brick supplier/or even the builder and ask them for addresses with your brick and natural mortar and white mortar?
Selkirk did that with us, they told us which building sites had which colour mortar so that we could drive around and check them out and not waste our time with the wrong mortar colours.... Hope that helps? Re: Mortar questions 15Aug 14, 2008 9:20 pm Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅
Here is a close up of the yellowish colour mortar, so what do you guys think?? Would white look better - or if I can get this as standard and save $1000 would it look ok? My karma ran over your dogma Re: Mortar questions 16Aug 14, 2008 9:44 pm regarding your mortar joints, i would go flush or rolled with the bricks you are using, these looks great with square edged bricks, and are less likely to attract spidesr to nest in the joints
It also will show off the mortar colour more than a raked joint. Building in manor lakes 2008 Re: Mortar questions 18Aug 15, 2008 2:49 pm mm I was thinking of using natural flush mortar with my bricks which are the same colour as yours.
I also have no idea, but I think the white/light will make the bricks look darker due to the contrast. The reason we were thinking natural is to give it a more uniform look, and not make too much of a feature of the bricks. It's all so difficult. ETA: I have no idea what I was trying to say when I said "give it a more universe look". Oh, I know, uniform! Re: Mortar questions 19Aug 15, 2008 3:19 pm I'm not going to be any help either I'm afraid.......our future neighbours opposite us have got the same mortar as shown in the photo, they had yellowy sand and their bricks are Hawthorn same as Petals. Now the overall look of the house is huge when you look at their bricks and then Petals bricks. I think you should really try and find out where you can see a house done with the different mortar. I really love dark looking houses, neighbours bricks look dark with the mortar and they also have woodland grey windows, gutter, fascia and charcoal roof, so I'm loving it which is a good thing as I will see it everytime I look out my bedroom windows!
Bel, you have spent so much time deciding on your brick you probably should spend more time in tracking down some houses showing the different mortar colours. I think (from memory) the mortar finishes with PD are - Raked, Ironed and Flush. The best choice for our brick was Ironed due to the worm holes as they called it. We are also having Natural mortar because we wanted a darker look. Hopetoun have the colours of the mortar too, maybe you could pop in there on the weekend?
