Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 24, 2018 8:05 am Hi, I am building a double story home as an owner builder and I want to incorporate the home automation in this home. Can you please please advise how much does this cost apart from regular electrical wiring and electrical equipments I would normally install. I understand that some electrical switches or equipment which I would normally install may not work and need to be changed. So, considering all this, any idea what will it cost extra. I understand it is quite a general question with no much information in this but it is the very early stages of my research and any help in the matter will be much appreciated. The house will be a 5 BED house with a home cinema, open living areas. 100 downlights, 5 fans, Ducted aircon etc. Thank you in advance. Honestly Josh, without specifying what automation you want, this really is like asking how long is a piece of string. Automation can be as simple as having, for example, smart phone controlled lights for a few thousand dollars to having, for example, everything that opens and shuts using motors and voice control/smart switches/computer and smartphone control costing $10,000 to $100,000 and beyond. Perhaps you should start by jotting down a bit of a wish list/design brief and once you know the level of automation you are after, then a better answer could be provided. BTW, how any house could need 100 downlights is beyond me. Re: Home automation 5Jun 24, 2018 2:01 pm k3nnis I’ve got a 29 square double storey home and I have 65 downlights so it’s not crazy to have that amount of downlights That is madness. I'm building a 47.5sq home at the moment and we have a total of 60 downlights and provisioned for 8 pendant lights. We weren't working to a budget either, we just put them where we needed them. My father is also an electrician so I ran the plans by him and asked him where he would put them and then based our choices off that and the consultants recommendations. You must be able to see your house from the moon when all the lights are on haha. Instagram blog: https://www.instagram.com/ourforevertonhome/ Re: Home automation 6Jun 24, 2018 2:03 pm Hahah yep. I have 3 pendants for island bench and a big pendant above dining table. I don’t regret having that many downlights Actually I could have one or two more but decided to save that $100 per downlight cost! Re: Home automation 7Jun 24, 2018 2:19 pm k3nnis Hahah yep. Well I don't think you'll need to worry about adding more down the road. How many watts are your downlights? Ahh ok, I think the cheapest upgrade for a with our builder was $110 for a 6watt LED downlight and $140 for a 10watt. We went with the 10watt LED's which may be why we got away with only needing 60. We also went with 3 single globe pendants over the island bench, a 6 globe pendant over the dining table, a 4 globe pendant in the formal lounge, an 8 globe chandelier over our staircase void, and then single globe pendants in the powder room, master ensuite, master walk in robe. Actually that's 9 pendants in total. So I'm hoping we should have plenty of light Instagram blog: https://www.instagram.com/ourforevertonhome/ Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1. optional, you can but normally just use the earth from the main switch board 2. should be enough but the distance determines voltage drop - sparky should work it… 1 28921 We already paid for somfy motors for the blinds.
