Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jan 19, 2017 1:04 am Hey team Just wanted to get some advice about painting the internal walls after handover. Reading lots of different opinions re painting immediately vs waiting 6-12mnths. What are the advantages/disadvantages of each? Thank you! No problems. Paint didn't bubble or peel or wipe off. She used Dulux paint only. Even now there is hardly any hairline cracks and the only area to bubble & peel was the ensuite because the exhaust fan stopped working & tenants didn't let her know. Same with my sister's house. No problems with the paint (although huge cracks appeared in the corners - due mostly because of the cheap & nasty Thermalite internal bricks used). The house was sold about 10 years later & the paintwork was sti in good condition. Dulux again. By comparison, my last house was painted by the builder and the walls were sealed first. Within the first 12-18 mths the paint in some areas started bubbling & peeling & lots more than the usual settling in hairline cracks started appearing -looked like the cracked shell of a hard boiled egg. Solver paint used. Make of that what you will. With my current house, i'm in 2 minds about whether to seal & paint now or do it later. i think i will end up waiting for 6-12 mths to paint even though i'd prefer to do it before i move in - easier & quicker to do when there is no furniture. Ar at the very least sealing the walls now with an oil-based sealer and then the final xolour when your ready. The reason he said that is because the white set has lime in it which if left unsealed will cause any furniture placed against the wall to begin to rot. So, time permitting looks like i might be sealing the walls before i move in. Might see if the sealer can be tinted tho. Reason being that unsealed plaster is porous so any marks on the wall are going to be harder to remove from raw walls and we didn't want plaster dust coming off the unsealed walls all over new carpets and our furniture etc. We also figured it was a far simpler job to paint an unfurnished house than needing to move furniture, remove photos/art from walls, take down blinds/curtains and empty wardrobes, the pantry, linen cupboard etc to paint later. Other than some minor settlement cracking and the odd scuff marks which we patched up when we sold the house after six years we had absolutely no issues with painting immediately and intend to do the same with this new build also Follow our build with Express Two Storey (Ventura Group): viewtopic.php?f=31&t=85122 Re: Painting help! 8Jan 19, 2017 8:24 pm Do not put oil based sealer on plasterboard. You should seal it with wall board sealer. And paint with dulux wash and wear. A lot easier to do before moving in. But I would recommend a professional do it as its a there is a lot of prep work that goes into a new house. This advise is coming from a trade qualified Painter. Re: Painting help! 9Jan 20, 2017 12:02 am Thanks for the advice craigasaurus. Like me, the OP is building a double-brick house with wet plastered walls, what is your recommendation in this case?
