Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Nov 26, 2006 12:54 pm Hi,
Can anyone give me advice regarding grout colours. I know that grout can make or break the tile layout and I don't want to be in that situation years down the track. Anyway, we went to pick all our tiles (floor, bathroom, ensuite, laundry) for the house yesterday and we're quite happy with our selection. By the end of it we ended up going with one grout colour for both the walls and hobs of the bathroom/ensuite etc and the floors. It's a silver grey (essentially a light grey) to compliment all the tiles (the mid-grey floor tiles and the white and the cocoa brown tiles we picked for the wall tiles). I originally wanted the darker grey grout that matched perfectly with the floor tiles but the assistant told us that the darker grey grout wouldn't go so well with the white tiles. Hence we ended up picking the lighter grey just so it would compliment all of them. Is it then weird to have two different grout colours in the bathroom/ensuite? A darker grey on the floor and a lighter grey to go on the walls? Im justifying this thought with the reasoning that because there's a tile change from the floor to the walls/hobs that a grout change wouldn't look bad at all as long as all the colours work well together. Does anyone else have two grout colours in the one room? Any advice is welcome! [sneakersss] Re: Requesting advice on tile and grout colours 2Nov 26, 2006 2:49 pm What you have chosen is fine.
It really isn’t a problem having two different coloured grouts. I myself would have opted for a white grout in the wall tiles. This will extenuate the cocoa colour of the wall tiles and blend perfectly with the white tiles. No doubt you are using white porcelain for the bath and hand basin, another colour match for the white grout. I do this with all the bathrooms I design. Its only good sense that we use a darker grout for the floor as this is the best option when using a darker floor tile. But what you have chosen will work as well. Remembering that your white tiles will now have a slight grey grout, this will not be a crisp clean look. Good luck and have fun! Guess I just needed someone to say that my thought process made sense. The white grout with the white tiles thing does make sense - but I'm scared of anything white (other than wall paint) hehe. So I think I'll stick to the silver grey grout for the walls. Also because the white tiles we chose isn't exactly white white - it's kind of offwhite and matte so the white grout looks much whiter than the tile. But, thanks again for the advice and the well wishes. We have our colour selection appointment tomorrow and that's kind of playing with my mind. So many colours to chose from! If you though the grout issue was worrying wait till you tackle the colours of paint! Take your time, don’t rush into it. Take along anything that will be moving with you. Lounge slips or cushions, doona covers that you love and don’t want to replace. Anything that has a solid colour that will be going into the house. This will help you on the day. Feature walls can always be done at a later date if you find that too overwhelming. Your lucking….I’m sure you wont get shown the range of colours I have…hundreds!! But in hind sight you really will be only looking for at most maybe 3? Good luck, don’t stress, it will all work out!
