Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Dec 19, 2016 5:29 pm Hi, My ensuite niche is 100x40 and it cost $630. My bathroom niche is 60x40 and its $340. Has anyone else's been that much? I know these are fiddly to do but I can't believe the prices for them. I wanted to know what everyone else prices were for these. Also if anyone has taken the risk and taken them out of their tender and caught the builder on the job and asked him to do it and paid him? I don't know if you can even do this. Any information and advice would be great as I am a fair bit over budget already! Re: Niche price and questions. 2Dec 19, 2016 5:50 pm Hi Rochelle, I had a plumber advise against putting a niche in the bathroom as he said they are prone to leak through into your wall space as they don't drain properly and are havens for mould as they are small spaces with lots of cuts so unsealed edges of tiles. They do look lovely though Re: Niche price and questions. 3Dec 19, 2016 6:09 pm Mine are 40x40 and they were free, part of the standard build price (both en suite and main bathroom).
I would think they are only a problem with regards to leaking and mold if they are badly installed. Re: Niche price and questions. 4Dec 19, 2016 6:18 pm The cost of construction is minimal and depending on what wall they're on the will already be made into the prefab frame. Our tiler charged us around $400 extra for tiling one large niche and two small plus the cost of the metal edging. If your looking to save the cost you omit them. Yours weren't in your tender at all and than you paid your tiler to do them? Or they need to be in your tender to make the prefab frame? Thanks. Re: Niche price and questions. 6Dec 19, 2016 8:15 pm They need to be in you tender to make the prefab frame. We are going through a small builder so the tiling wasn't in the contract, we hired him separately. I was giving me example which might help you see the costs involved with niches. I would be questioning what type of builder they are if the can't do a ledge?
