I would think they are only a problem with regards to leaking and mold if they are badly installed. Our tiler charged us around $400 extra for tiling one large niche and two small plus the cost of the metal edging. If your looking to save the cost you omit them. We are going through a small builder so the tiling wasn't in the contract, we hired him separately. I was giving me example which might help you see the costs involved with niches.
