Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Nov 14, 2016 10:02 am Hi all, Slab of my house is done, and one mesh wire is visible on top of the slab - somewhere in the middle of the floor. It's just one wire and about one one foot length is visible from on the top of the slab. It is still covered by concrete on the side of the wire, but the top part of the wire is exposed without any concrete on the top. You know what I mean? Carpet is going to come on top of this anyway, but I want to know if this is normal. On the corner where the garage is, I can see a tiny bit of thermocol (no concrete covering a small area on the outside edge). Of course, brick layer is going to come around it, but is it a problem? I raised these two issues with the builder and he said it was very minor and not to worry about it. I wanted to know if these two issues can be ignored, or would there be any long-term impact? Below are the images for both the issues I have described: 1. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1VLB1 ... sp=sharing 2. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1VLB1 ... sp=sharing Thank you. Re: Slab issues 2Nov 14, 2016 11:19 am I have not build yet, going thru forums experience My personal opinion is Polystyrene pods appearing in slab shows a poor quality of slab and prone to water damage in future. Please get a structural engineer verified, worth spending money before you go to VCAT Re: Slab issues 3Nov 16, 2016 11:21 am Thank you. Any other experts here to comment on it? I again had a chat with the builder, and he said he would apply some kind of anti corrosion solution on top of that exposed steel. Regarding the exposed polystyrene pod, he said that it was normal and wouldn't be an issue as the brick wall is going to cover it anyway. Am I panicking too much for no reason? Re: Slab issues 4Nov 16, 2016 12:23 pm Your issues with the slab aligns quite closely to what MorningStar had in this thread: viewtopic.php?t=85205 Re: Slab issues 5Nov 22, 2016 2:11 pm Since the steel wire is visible on the top of the slab, I am just a bit concerned that the builder might not have put thick enough concrete cover on top of the steel. I can see the wire only at one place though on the whole slab. But well, it takes only one place to make me stressed about the whole thing. Re: Slab issues 6Nov 22, 2016 2:30 pm I would be putting the build on hold and getting an inspector through that all seems very dodge, how think do you engineering drawings say the concrete top and sides should? In my opinion in no way should you be able to see either of your faults. In my opinion in no way should you be able to see either of your faults. It is an off the plan purchase, so I don't have all the engineering drawings. Re: Slab issues 8Nov 22, 2016 3:07 pm Must be a different builder to our, we brought off the plan but still got engineering plans with our contract. I just looked where the polystyrene is coming through your slab our minimum edge beam thickness of concrete before you reach the polystyrene was 400mm. Our Build Thread - JG king Memphis Re: Slab issues 9Nov 22, 2016 3:52 pm there in supposed to be a minimum of 90mm concrete over the waffle pod. No steel should show or it can rust and lead to concrete cancer. I know the builder had to take an approval from an independent surveyor before pouring the slab. Does he required another approval for the slab? Re: Slab issues 11Nov 22, 2016 5:54 pm adityajoshi37 Thank you. Any other experts here to comment on it? Regarding the exposed polystyrene pod, he said that it was normal and wouldn't be an issue as the brick wall is going to cover it anyway. Am I panicking too much for no reason? Firstly, I can't see any cross wires so it is not mesh that is exposed but a rebar placed on top of the mesh. The reason for rebar is that engineer wanted to reinforce that secion of the slab with bar on top of the mesh. This is an engineering issue and builder should get engineering opinion and solution and certification to this problem. On another note, this is just a start of your build and both exposed polystyrene and rebar are workmanship quality issues. You need to stand your ground or builder may think you are a pushover and not try to do better.
