Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 09, 2022 10:16 pm Hi Experts, My builder quote says - one 26L Rheem 6 Star rated gas instantaneous wall mounted hot water system. I am planning to build 30sq double storey home with 3 bathrooms with toilet, separate laundry. my question is whether this is one 26L gas heater is sufficient to get unterrupted hot water supply simultaneously when 2 bathrooms and kitchen is used at the same time. what about two hot water system, one for all bathrooms and another one for kitchen and laundry. Did anyone used two hot water system. will it be expensive? Appreciate your thoughts and advise. Re: How many hot water system in double storey home 2Aug 10, 2022 12:36 am Our house is single storey but is very long. We installed 2 water heaters. One does the ensuite, kitchen and alfresco. The other does the bathroom, laundry and powder room. The main reason we did it was due to the length of the runs. We dropped them to 2x20 litre versions rather than the single 26. It works well and saves the long runs that take ages to start running hot water. We never have issues with water pressure or lack of hot water. A double storey can often get all the wet areas close to each other so the issue of long runs like we have may be mitigated. Showers are restricted to no more than 9 litres per minute so a 26L heater will run 2 showers at the same time and still have enough left over for a tap so you probably don't really need it. If you have long runs and can afford the extra costs involved it is worth it. The 26 litre ones are so under powered it's not funny Hi Simeon. It's funny that you find the 26L underpowered. I was hesitant about instantaneous HWS as we had always used storage, but having 3 teenagers no storage system was going to be big enough for their ridiculoussly long showers. After discussing with our plumber we opted for 2x20L Rinnai and have never found them underpowered. Showers run a max of 9L, taps run between 4-9L so even when you are in the shower and someone runs the kitchen sink you don't notice a huge drop in pressure or temperature. You can tell another tap has been turned on but you could tell that even with a storage system. A 26L instantaneous HWS should technically supply enough hot water to run 2 showers and a tap at the same time. The pressure may drop but there is enough water to run them. However I do agree that if you can afford the extra cost for the supply and install, then installing 2 units and splitting the load is better. Hi Chippy, You are right, technically a 26L should be able to handle multiple taps being on at the same time, and it could be a water pressure issue, I have consulted a number of plumbers and an Hydraulic engineer and as no one had a satisfactory answer that solved my problemcI gave up trying to work it out. My only personal experience with a 26L Rinnai system was 2018/19 when I was building my own home we rented a brand new double story 4 bedroom Clarendon house in North Ryde. We were a family of 6 and had come from a 300 litre gas storage system which did run out from time to time, but had great pressure. Anyhow, the house water pressure seemed fine but every-time you were having a shower and the kitchen tap or any other tap was turned on hot water literally ran out. There were so many mornings that someone was trying to shower and you would hear screaming coming from a bathroom! At my new house where the water pressure again is average, but I put a 32 litre which serves the kitchen and the kids bathrooms and a 26 litre which does my ensuite. You can have 3 showers running and the kitchen taps on and no body loses hot water. In our larger homes we like to do 3, and we try and put a 26 Litre right outside the parent's ensuite so they have little lag time. Just a small luxury to have uninterrupted hot water. Re: How many hot water system in double storey home 6Aug 11, 2022 8:31 am We have a 20l system that covers two showers, both on second floor. The only times it has issues is when two people are having a shower during colder nights during winter. I'd say 26l system would probably be ok for us Re: How many hot water system in double storey home 7Aug 11, 2022 8:54 am I have a single 26 in the old and in the new house. On really cold mornings, it takes about 10 sec for hot water to start running. Haven't found it an issue. 23sq and a 32sq home, both single story. Ive been pretty impressed by them and never even considered installing two or more. Wouldn't they ultimately be limited by water pressure? I.e. aren't you e going to get a drop at the faucet regardless if you have two bathrooms and a kitchen running water? Dark matter scientist, can breathe underwater, mind reader and can freeze matter just by willing it. Trust me, its in my sig. Re: How many hot water system in double storey home 8Aug 11, 2022 11:41 am We're currently building a two storey with three bathrooms. Have spec'd in two instant GHW systems. One on the east side of house that will service downstairs guest and upstairs master ensuites (vertically above/below each other) and the kitchenette outside the master bed. The other is on the west side of the house to service the upstairs kids bathroom and powder room vanity and downstairs laundry, kitchen and powder rooms. Think it was just under $3k to add the second unit. Re: How many hot water system in double storey home 9Aug 11, 2022 12:27 pm Great replies. thanks guys. Apologies if my question is silly. what is the recommended position of two hotwater system for a double storey 30 sq home, Should the first hotwater system be in ground floor near kitchen or bathroom and the second hotwater system be in first floor near to master suite? I am thinking to use in this way: First hotwater to supply all 3 bathrooms (1 in ground floor and 2 in first floor) and second one for kitchen and laundry. Re: How many hot water system in double storey home 10Aug 11, 2022 12:56 pm It entirely depends on the location of where the hot water needs to be sent. Basically you are putting in two systems to avoid the long runs of hot water, so put the HWS where it makes most sense to eliminate them. For my own house, the only areas requiring hot water on the eastern side of the house are my upstairs master ensuite and downstairs guest ensuite, which are above and below each other, along with a small kitchenette next to master upstairs, so i've put one system on the east side of house to service those. All my other hot water service areas all along the western side of the house, some 16m away east/west, so it made sense to put the other HWS on the west side to service everything else. This avoided the western HWS needing to send hot water the entire width of my house, which was the long run I was trying to elimnate. I am thinking to use in this way: First hotwater to supply all 3 bathrooms (1 in ground floor and 2 in first floor) and second one for kitchen and laundry. i'd go closer to the bathrooms, cause you don't stand naked in the kitchen freezing while waiting for the kitchen tap to get hot. now in terms of having them on different floors, i'm not sure if builders would agree to put anything on the first floor, usually they are all on the ground floor because they need access for servicing, and the gas ones need to be outdoors, not indoors. i've investigated putting in the instant electric ones internally, but our builder didn't wanna touch it. but in theory you could put somethin like this internally: https://www.stiebel-eltron.com.au/singl ... ter-system Re: How many hot water system in double storey home 13Aug 11, 2022 6:47 pm I would put 2, one serving upper floor bathrooms and ensuite(s), one - for ground floor: kitchen, guest WC, laundry. The ground floor one can be just 26L, while at the upper floor I would go for the bigger one (considering there is a higher chance for ppl at the bedrooms having showers at the same time). Local connections can be done through grouping them into hot and cold water manifolds, this will help to prevent pressure changes and will significantly reduce the number of T connections and fittings. https://www.uponor.com/en-us/residentia ... onor-logic the sun master is the solar heating to "warm" the water in the tank the S26 is your hot water system which will heat the water (25 degrees?) so with both turned on you… 2 14059 Thanks good to know.
