Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Oct 06, 2016 2:07 pm Hi! I'm new here and could use some advice... I am starting a knockdown rebuild next year with Porter Davis. They have advised me that due to a change of regulations it is now my responsibility to appoint a building surveyor for the works ( http://www.vba.vic.gov.au/2016-changes- ... -surveyors , https://www.consumer.vic.gov.au/buildingguide ). They have recommended 3 private surveyors which if I use them will not incur me any extra costs. From what I understand, my options are: 1) Appoint a municipal building surveyor for free 2) Use one of their recommended private surveyors for free (they are http://www.djmbc.com.au , http://www.buildingstrategies.com.au , http://www.cbcvic.com.au/ ) 3) Appoint my own private building surveyor and pay them myself I'm guessing that by using PD's recommended surveyor they may not be acting in my best interests, by using the municipal surveyor we may incur delays and that appointing my own surveyor could get very expensive. (I really have no evidence to suggest this is true, just guessing!) I would really appreciate any info that anyone can provide on the pros & cons of these different options, or anyone with experience of using any of these companies or options. Thanks heaps in advance - this is all new to me and I'm finding it very confusing!! Re: Appointing a Building Surveyor 2Oct 07, 2016 10:46 am I just encountered the same question myself, I had previously planned to pay an independent building inspector come through at each stage but I guess this is different to that? Hopefully someone can shed some light on this for us both!
